I'm with you regarding Smoke, I love it and for the same reasons as yourself, you can hear the raw emotion, especially when her voice catches as she sings through the refrain....
The bit about 'some' thinking it lacks the polish of tracks like Torn & Big Mistake, is my usual effort to be even-handed...
There are fans out there, (on Nat forums), who, while loving the song, feel it lacks commercial qualities.... Personally, I think that very same aspect raises it above the general run of commercial radio, which I often find lacklustre and is why I rarely listen to commercial radio
