Tour De France 2009


The 2009 Tour de France will be the 96th Tour de France. Beginning on 4 July, it will start in the principality of Monaco with a 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) individual time trial that includes a section of the Circuit de Monaco. Stage 2 will also start in Monaco. The official start announcement was made in Monaco and attended by Prince Albert on 14 December 2007.

The race will visit a total of four nations: France, Spain, Switzerland and Italy as well as two Principalities: Monaco and Andorra. The total length is 3,445 kilometres (2,141 mi), including 93 in time-trials. There will be seven mountain stages with three uphill finishes, and one medium-mountain stage. The race includes a team time trial for the first time since 2005, the shortest distance in individual time trials since 1967, and the first penultimate day mountain stage in the Tour's history.

The route
Running from Saturday July 4th to Sunday July 26th 2009, the 96th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,500 kilometres.
These 21 stages have the following profiles:
  • 10 flat stages,
  • 7 mountain stages,
  • 1 medium mountain stage,
  • 2 individual time-trial stages,
  • 1 team time-trial stage.

Distinctive aspects of the race
  • 3 mountain finishes,
  • 2 rest days,
  • 55 kilometres of individual time-trials,
  • 20 Category 1, Category 2 and highest level passes will be climbed.
