Yes, but an acquittal on appeal in this case is not so likely. The fact is they are a bunch of lowlifes.. no one really cares about them. Do you think Jayalalitha is going to get her hands dirty doing them favours? She'll be hoping that whatever happens happens quickly - this is a a political embarassment for her.
Still, I will say that the TN judiciary often does weird stuff - they are somewhat more authoritarian than most.
