Cool Wimbledon 2007 - Official Thread

The ChampionShips, 2007

The most prestigious event in tennis calendar, The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly referred to as simply "Wimbledon" begins from today at the all England Tennis Club.

The Champion, Roger Federer bids to become the first man since Bjorn Borg to win the Men's Singles at Wimbledon for the fifth year running. While most would still back Federer to achieve this feat, Nadal has shown that he can be beaten although whether thats possibe on Federar's own home turf, grass is anyone's guess. The women's draw is much more wide open. While Maria Sharapova and french open winner, Justine Henin will start as favouraits, Last year has shown that its tough to predict anything in women't tennis.

Indian Interest:
Sania Mirza: Sania Mirza has a tough draw at Wimbledon this year(like any other year frankly, she needs to improve her ranking to get easier draws as at any stage there are 40+ better players than her) She faces Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia in the first round of the grass court championships. The 20-year-old Hyderabadi, ranked 34 places above No 80 Shvedova, could face another Russian and former top-10 player, Nadia Petrova, in the second round if she manages to win her first round match making her progress pretty tough

In the doubles, Sania has teamed with Israel's Shahar Peer. The duo, seeded 16th, will take on Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson and Lilia Osterloh of the United States in the first round.

Sania Mirza is also teaming up with Mahesh Bhupathi for mixed doubles, and hopefully we have a chance of getting a pure Indian team win there if both play the game they are known for and stay in form.

Mens Doubles will see both Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi partner their different foreign partners and face an easy time in the initial rounds. Hopefully a win prospect in the men's doubles between the two of them.

Meanwhile Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, has become the first Pakistani in after 31 years to qualify for Wibledon. He has become only the third Pakistani to achieve this: Aisam-ul-Haq: 1st Pakistani in Wimbledon since 1976 at All Things Pakistan

Whats New this Year?
For starters center court doesn't have a roof this year in the buildup to make a new retractable roof that would be ready by 2009: (HERE)

And the biggie this year, we are going to see player challenge system using Hawk Eye technology. We can now have a player challenge system with players having the power to challenge line calls using Hawk Eye. (HERE and HERE)
