Consolidating its newly won control of Spain's No. 2 wireless phone company, the Vodafone Group said it had agreed to acquire 39 percent of Airtel from three sellers for about $8.4 billion in stock. When completed, the transactions will give Vodafone 74 percent of Airtel, ending a struggle with British Telecommunications to dominate the company; British Telecom owns 18 percent of Airtel and is represented on its board. Vodafone is acquiring 30.4 percent of Airtel from Banco Santander Central Hispano S.A.; 5.4 percent from Acciona S.A.; and 2.7 percent from Corporacion Financiera Alba S.A. Acciona retains 5.4 percent of Airtel and an option to swap it for more Vodafone stock.
