Tata Nano : Peoples car unveiled today at Autoexpo

With much fanfair and much anticipation, at last Ratan Tata unveiled his dream project

Tata Nano - the peoples car.

From the primary appearances it looks cute. .

Specs wise its almost matching with Maruti 800 its immediate competitior.

Its going to have 624 cc petrol engine housed in rear and producing 33 bhp. Its going to meet Bharat Stage 3 and Euro 4 emission norms. The claims are for 20 KMPL fuel efficiency.

Its slated to release in two version to start with standard and luxury.

Pricewise Tatas have disappointed a little though, as they have priced the basic standard version at 1 lac for dealers. So adding taxes and all it will end up at about 1.4 lac still its cool price for a car.

I expected a better response from FE enthusiasts, whether exciting or not but this is an important step for India and Automotive Industry.

When Ratan Tata actually drove it in today, i thought, damn this is a toy

I am not a fan of Matiz look anyway, so i can't say i like this look but then at 1lak any looks is very good look and to be fair it looks super for its price.

TOp speed 90, 20km/pl, and crash tested and compliant with emission norms, Maruti has its work cut out now. The only issue could be with the 624cc engine as compared to 800. (Diesel variant is also in the pipeline i heard, and the luxury one has AC) If all that is for even 1.5lak with good interiors then a lot of people will buy it, even those who can afford bigger cars. I personally would want a second car thats easy to park and has good fuel economy.

Although all these are claims for now. Whether 20km average is under running conditions or not, how good is reliability and spares cost, we have to see. The production starts this year end i suppose?

expected production is in second half 2008 but in reality i wont expect it to be on roads before second quarter 2009.

Anything earlier it will be a monopoly game for tatas.

Bajaj has sprung a surprise with their model unveiled before tatas.

lets see how it develops.

Maruti sure have their task cu out that too sharply, i expect a blood shed in prices of M800 and Alto.

Rahul Bajaj's Initial reaction was that this will not work. He doesn't believe Tata's have the financial's right to bring this car for 1lak.

two thumbs down from my side for this car.Man,this thing cheaper than walking and it looks like a golf cart with doors and headlights on it.To keep up with price tag,there might me heavy cost cutting(Tatas know how to cut cost) on body parts,engine components,interiors,blah,blah,blah,etc and i really doubt the safety aspect of this car too...with this car i can expect bigger traffic woes and pollution.

EDIT: damn,they put the engine in teh wrong end :p

Already roads are jammed! Now this car

India needs to build wide roads and then introduce such cars..
1. where is the parking space?
2. where is the driving space?

hmmm the car's price would be a dampener i think, even for those who would want to upgrade from a motorcycle to a car.
other than that the car does not look all that bad. personally it is a good buy for my family, since it would be easy to park plus all of us can go somewhere together and not by bus or train or rick.

will this be the car that would go into production or would there be a few more changes made?

I thought this car would have a fiber body(like Reva), but gotto know that it would be made of Aluminium. I would be interested if the on road price is anywhere around 1.5 lakhs.

This car is going to sell like hot cakes...the looks are gr8 for a 1L car and maruti seriously needs to take the 800 back to design studios to make it appealing once again..tht 25 year old design is going to cost them a lot if they dont do something fast..when they can revive the zen into the zen estilo with the new looks, why cant they do the same to the 800?? its about time...ppl in india didnt have any choice b4 this in the lowest car segment...so they kept buying the 800...but now with bajaj and tata getting into the low cost car war in a big way, maruti needs to sort it out real fast if they wish to keep selling the 800 right into the next decade.. Otherwise with serious challenge like this (finally!!), the 800 is gonna go the way of the dodo bird very soon...
