Default Jeffery Archer's Novels

Let's discuss the novels by Archer, one of the most consistent author I've read.

Topics and Themes: Archer specializes in larger than life characters. His novels usually follow the protagonist right from birth, and usually to his death. And his main characters seem to follow very different tracks, but keep intersecting throughout the novels. Many times, Archer narrates the same events through the eyes of all main characters. Thus we get to see the same event from different angles. Yes, Archer's best books are epics - not very inviting for the casual reader, but a very rewarding experience for those who take the plunge.

Politics plays a important role in his works, and a number of his books are actually about the lives of politicians. He has dabbled with thrillers and espionage genres.

My top 3 Archer Books -

#3 - Honour among Thieves
A nice spy thriller. Saddam has stolen the Declaration of Independence, and the CIA is trying to get it back. As far as spy thrillers go, not really at the same level as The Bourne Identity, but a delightful read nonetheless. The detailed planning and execution of the robbery is very well written.

#2 - Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less
A funny thriller A bigshot tycoon has swindled, cheated and hoodwinked his way to the top. But this time, he messed with the wrong guys. Four very different people - an maths don from Oxford, an french art dealer, a doctor, and an english lord - get together to take back what was stolen from them. One million Dollars; not a penny more, not a penny less. Total chaos ensues as these amatuer conmen make their plans to get their money back.

#1 - Kane and Abel
Archer's greatest epic. Two men, born worlds apart, who share nothing but their date of birth. Kane is the son of a rich and powerful American banker. Abel is born unattended in the forests of poland.
The book follows the lives of these two men right from birth to death. Kane follows in his fathers footsteps and heads his bank. Abel, after many difficulties, imigrates to America, where he starts of as a waiter. He rises through the ranks quickly, and finally owns the largest chain of hotels in America. A great rivalry forms between these two, and Abel is determined to destroy Kane.
This novel will keep you riveted as you follow the many twists and turns their lives take.

Other books by Archer - (from the wiki). The ones in Gray I've not read.

1975 - In the Lap of the Gods
1976 - Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less
1977 - Shall We Tell the President? - An edge of the seat thriller, in which a rookie CIA agent has to work directly with the CIA director to stop an assisination.
1979 - Kane and Abel
1980 - Willy visits the Square World
1980 - A Quiver Full of Arrows (Short story collection) - Simple stories to start with, until you come to the twist in the end.
1982 - The Prodigal Daughter - The sequel to 'Kane and Abel' This follows Abel's daughter, her life in american politics, and her eventual appointment to President.
1984 - First Among Equals - Another political epic. This follows the lives of 4 men as they fight for the top position in U.K. politics.
1986 - A Matter of Honour
1987 - Shall We Tell the President? (Second Version) - Same as above.
1988 - A Twist in the Tale (Short story collection) - Total timepass. Devilish twists.
1991 - As the Crow Flies - Yet another biographical epic. This involves politics (expected), marketing, romance, war, crime, and for a change has real villians.
1993 - Honour Among Thieves
1994 - Twelve Red Herrings (Short story collection) - Same as the previous two.
1996 - The Fourth Estate
1998 - The Eleventh Commandment - I actually don't remember this
2000 - To Cut A Long Story Short (Short story collection)
2002 - Sons of Fortune - Similar to 'First among Equals', but this time set in the U.S.
2002 - A Prison Diary
2003 - A Prison Diary Volume 2
2004 - A Prison Diary Volume 3
2006 - False Impression
2006 - Cat O'Nine Tales (Short story collection)
2007 - The Gospel According to Judas (with Francis J. Moloney)

yeah... that is one of my fav Archer books.

I loved Sons of Fortune too, but it was too similar Kane and Abel.

Kane and Abel was superb!! I wouldnt rate it above Not a penny more.... though. I like Not a penny more better.

And his short stories are brilliant. My favourite is the one abt the Iraqi who takes asylum in the US and then on a flight from Turkey to US, due to technical difficulties, he is in Iraq and is recognised by one of Saddam's cronies.

What happens then is brilliant !!

And "Checkmate" from "To cut a long story short" is also mindblowing.

False Impression is sad though.... way below his standards.

Cat O nine tales is pretty goood..... but slightly below his usual standards.

A Matter of Honour isnt that great.

And Fourth Estate ---- MY GOD !! That blew my mind whne I read it in 8th standard !! What a book !! Seriously !! Both the protagonists are such @$$holes at times you dont know whom to root for
