Its politics at its best. The proposed sethu samudram project that passes through the controversial Ram Sethu has created flutters across nation. If the project is completed successfully then it would save considerable time and finances while sailling from Arabian ocean to Bay of Bengal.

However i feel the economic factor has taken a back seat and its the actual politics that has been more dominant.

The Indian National Congress(and its allies) is pitting for the project and has actually gone as far as questioning the existance of 'Ram'. They clearly are aiming at the vote bank for the general elections that many believe could happen as early as the first half of 2008. On the other hand BJP is completely 'saffronising' this issue and by no means be willing to compromise on Ram sethu.

But in general i feel that there is another 'babri masjid' in making.

If the Ram sethu is destroyed then there is no doubt in my mind, that we will witness another 'godhra', however the magnitude of the riots will be much larger this time around.

btw i think its also important to respect religious sensibilities sometimes over pure economics.as some author wrote,the reaction of other religious groups would have been just like this had this been an important site in their text. but would our parties have göne ahead then with such a plan? The answer is no as other groups form core votebank of the ruling parties.

Though i'm hardly the guy who shud be making a comment on religious issues, as i dont follow or believe in them, but still i think the comments tht karunanidhi is making in the last few days are way too provocative..i mean no offence to any faith, but we all know how staunchly Muslims follow and protect their faith and react when something defamatory is said about their religion..now i may not be supporting anyone here, but i think, to an extent it is not all tht wrong..i mean, nobody has got the right to insult or ridicule something as sensitive as anyone's faith....

And this is whr the hindus lag behind...they are way too tame...its surprising tht thr was no reaction from the community evn when Karunanidhi called ram a drunkard..evn calling him a himalayan lie...thus questioning the character and the presence of Lord Ram... Now had somebody made such a comment about Prophet Mohammad, we wud have had riots all over the country, n prolly a death sentence for karunanidhi by the clerics...

Even the Muslim and Christian religious preachers have criticized tht idiot, Karunanidhi for ridiculing ppl's faith..no matter which religion... I think, its high time, the government took action against him...n afaik, its a crime to ridicule or criticize a religion in public acc. to the IPC...is the court sleeping??

Look, it is best not to worry about that dude (Karuna). He is a hundred years old and he can't live forever. His son Stalin (what a name) will not have the clout he has.... no one has ever managed to transfer power like that except the Nehru-gandhis... and he ain't one of them. So ignore the fool. Whats the dangerous part is that no one in whole of South(or lets say Tamil Nadu) has actually voiced his concerns or said that his remarks are uncalled for. I must say i am very surprised.

It just gives the impression that you can speak what you want against Hinduism and get away, its as if its fashionable to do so. Hindus can blame only themselves. Its one religion(thankfully maybe) that has never asserted itself.

I completely agree with you. If a simple cartoon could cause the riots all over the world, then its hard to imagine what would have happened if someone actually questioned the actual existence of Prophet Mohammad.

The problem actually with the people of TN is that not many out there are the believers of Ram, and those idiots never bother taking on their leaders.

Surprisingly the left front, that opposes most of the initiatives by UPA is actually Pitting in for the project arguing that there is no 'Scientific evidence' suggesting the existance of Ram Sethu.

Its common sense and the politicians need to understand the aftermath if their religious sentiments are hurt. I was in gujarat some days back and i could already feel the tension out there. I am sure that would be the case in most of the states.

We can already see the signs of things to come. Last some of the activists planted a petrol bomb in Karunanidhi's daughter's house here in Bangalore.

But this A*s S*le has still has not re-strained from making the comments that would provoke many people.
