Barack Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

U.S. President Barack Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced.The head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Thorbjoern Jagland, said he won the coveted award, “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

The announcement of US President Barack Obama as winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize drew gasps of surprise and applause by reporters assembled in Oslo - and observers around the world. The Norwegian Nobel Committee stunned observers with its choice since Obama has only served nine months of his presidency.

Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the committee, said it had considered what Obama had done during the year - and that the prize was not for what Obama might do in the future, for instance in Afghanistan.

None of the organizations or analysts who follow Nobel prizes predicted the award to Obama, who is the third sitting U.S. president to have won the prize, following Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson in 1919.Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 Nobel nomination deadline.

The committee - appointed by the Norwegian parliament - is no stranger to controversy and may face criticism over its latest choice.

Critics have mentioned that it missed out on selecting the likes of Mahatama Gandhi and questioned its policy in recent years to award a wider peace concept, for instance the 2004 selection of Kenyan human rights activist and environmentalist Wangari Maathai.

The prize - worth 10 million kronor (1.4 million dollars) - is scheduled to be presented in Oslo on December 10,the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite.

Even though He is trying to be the face of the reviving world economy but I personally feel this award is just too premature and Hell,this comes at a time when Obama is thinking of increasing American armed presence in Afghanistan

He hasn't even completed a year in office[just nine months],though he has proposed things and is just about getting started but he still hasn’t made any such a contribution towards world peace in the preceding year that make him eligible for a Peace PrizeIt takes decades to determine what work is deserving of a Nobel prize and what might happen till his term ends could very well show him to have been undeserving of this prize(Obama vs Iran)

Its like the Nobel jury chose a symbol over completed actions

You really don’t have to be nice always...sometimes you have to show your bad side so that you can sort out who can accept you at worst mood... if people cant handle you at your worst, then they don’t deserve you at your best!

NO doubt he is a Great Personality.

But, Noble price for this short work-period is just undigestable.I really don't think he has contributed so much for World Peace, that he deserves Noble Price.

Very stupid move by the jury. This one defies all logic and sanity actually.

Many have said that Obama is a great orator but on the ground, he hasn't done anything extraordinary

• He hasn't actually managed to get the health insurance reform, the mainstay of his election campaign passed. Its still a long way before it becomes a law.
• About reviving the economy, i don't think Obama can take much credit there. His stimulus package was preceded by Bush Jr's and by deft management by Ben Bernankie and Paulson. As such 13% fiscal deficit is hardly something to gloat about.
• Its under him, for the first time in a century, that the dollar is all set to lose its status of currency of choice in trade. Already we saw some opec members dumping the US dollar which led to a massive fall in dollar rates.
• Internationally, he has made historic speeches in Cairo trying to bridge the divide between faiths but he hasn't done anything concrete. Either with respect to Israeli settlements or Palestinian state. Is just talking good enough to win a nobel prize?
• Afpak region is a mess. First a stupid move to talk to Taliban that led to them taking over Swat and then trying to win it back. Afghanistan itself has had a fraud election, so much for democracy ; and is seeing revival of Taliban.
• Iran threat hasn't been dealt with...

Imo very bad choice. They should have allowed him some time to do things on the ground before giving him an award. They just dealt the awards credibility a body blow by this move

Nobel Peace prize is a bloody joke. On top of it, nominations for 2009 were submitted early this year. Obama had only served a little, tiny while as president by then.
