Great news! (or some might say terrible news, if you are worried about Google trying to take over all parts of your life) Google has just announced a Google Chrome OS, a lightweight OS geared towards the Netbook market. Official Google Blog: Introducing the Google Chrome OS Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google. - OS would be open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks
- Netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010
- Complete redesign of OS achitecture to make the OS secure and fast
- Will work and support both x86 as well as ARM chips
- All web-based applications will automatically work
- Custom Apps that can work both in Chrome OS as well as existing OS's
I think its a great development. A google backed OS geared for speed would be wonderful. I anticipate a beeline for this OS among all the UMPC market.(although a linux backend, i think mer has been showing a lot of potential too: http://www.newlc.com/en/mer-best-mae...reerunner-demo) I also think we will see better ebook readers  in general now. And not to forget highly portable devices that will pack a punch  ---------------------------------------------- |

Its a Great Step towards Ending M$ Domination...but Google is going the M$ way....wants a share in everything

In some ways its one giant losing out and another coming along. Only Google is now going to control every part of your internet and mobile life, something MS didn't do

In a way it is good, but I think this came a bit late than I expected to happen. What else is left?
But atleast these guys will not give B$ like M$ does sometimes

I guess since its opensource the competition would be more between Linux based OS and this one

Not everything Google does is awesome. I have a feeling this won't succeed. OS market is VERY different from search engines and a couple of mergers and acquisitions.
It's just a Linux core with Chrome thrown over it. Even MS has something like this (Gazelle) under development.

You should realize things are going towards web. I really doubt if we'd have anything to do with OS
It would go the TV way, just buy a comp and plug in the internet, everything loads from the net

Well, I remember Ray Noorda's dreams and Sun's "Network is the computer" days. Google's are no different and I won't be amazed to see theirs shattered to pieces as well.
Not to mention I don't buy all that "Do good" crap and their intruding behavior should not be ignored by governments.
