Doctors :(

Few days back i lost one of my loved ones, a close one. I always propagate the need and importance of eye donation. But i was in such a shock state i could not think of anything else except the one i lost at that time. Couldn't it be better if docs are taught to be more informative to family of deceased. I wish they had asked me once about it. Only after cremation i remembered about eye donation. But it was too late.

Regrets that u have to suffer such a loss, pal...

And completely agreed, Doctors should be more communicative with Relatives of the diseased.

But some docs feel, the family shouldn't be disturbed by that news as well, cos most of them wouldn't agree at the time of cremation.

@Agnie : yeah, i agree..some ppl dont take it in good spirit if the doctors suggest something like that in their moment of grief...so i think, tht is why doctors prefer to keep quiet..

well its tough on parts of doctors to convince the relatives about organ donation.

Infact people or relatives of patients are majority of time not in position to accept the loss itself so its even more difficult to press for organ donation.

Infact in this regard some knowledgeable educated relative, or some social worker or some ngo cap play a great role.

When this question is raised the i would like to point out something here:

As the Road Traffic Accidents are increasing day by day if you find someone going brain dead because of accident and when there is no hope and doctors advise to turn off the life support system or relatives decide to take off it then if you happen to know this or are nearby try to convince them about organ donation.

Not only eyes, but kidneys, liver, lungs and heart can be transplanted.

Specially i mentioned RTA because this victims are full healthy individuals and they can bring lives to 7 patients.

That way relatives can take solace that they gained 7 relations by trading 1 with god.

I think there is also an issue with some religions forbidding the practice(at the sake of my ignorance on the matter) i think in Bhutto's case for example it was brought out that there was a need to cremate as early as possible and donation was forbidden.

Apart from that, i agree that unless someone from the deceased's family comes forward, its not an easy thing for the doctor to suggest.

I think, they wanted to cremate her as soon as possible so tht no one cud get hold of any evidence tht cud be acquired from her body... Imo, it had more to do with a conspiracy which their government was trying to hide than any religious reason... Every move of their government is shrouded in mysteries... They simply dont have the habit to come clean on anything..

The basic problem we face is lack of awareness regarding organ donation and so suggesting organ donation for the first time when the patient is critical or has deceased might come as a shock for some people.

We need to create universal awareness regarding organ donation and also have id cards stating that the person is an organ donor.

Various NGOs are actively working towards creating awareness but the sheer size of the country demands much more effort....

My dad is a liver transplant recepient and is actively working with a NGO called MOHAN Foundation...

If we can educate people in our neighbourhood regarding organ donation it will go a long way in helping someone in need...
