AHMEDABAD: Grads of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, (IIM-A) have done it again. The highest domestic package at the final placements for the flagship post graduate programme broke all previous records with a whopping package of Rs 60 lakh being offered to one student on Thursday, the first day of placements.

RPG had offered the highest domestic package last year of Rs 34.19 lakh. Though students and faculty remained tight-lipped about the placements, sources said that the offer was made to a student with significant work experience.

As PK Sinha, IIM-A faculty and incharge of the placements told TOI: "Salaries this year are expected to go much higher. The increase depends on work experience. This year we have more students with experience." An estimated 57 per cent of students this year have work experience under their belt.

About 60 offers were made on Day Zero of the placements which will conclude on March 13. New recruiters included ING Netherlands and Fischer Jordan, a management consultancy. As many as 17 companies are first-time recruiters apart from regulars like investment bankers Barclays, Merrill Lynch International and Goldman Sachs.

The Day Zero slot usually sees the best of international firms scouting the campus for the best brains. An interesting trend observed this year was that many of the firms, including foreign companies, gave offers for their branches in India.

"There is a good mix of domestic and international companies on Day Zero this year most of which, interestingly, are recruiting for their branches in India," said an IIM-A source.

Of the 249 students in the batch, 235 have lined up for placements which expects a visit to the campus by around 120 companies.

Day Zero also saw leading global investment bankers, private equity firms, mutual fund organisations and consultancy firms interviewing students. "There is not much change in the functional areas and industry profiles of companies recruiting this year," says Sinha.

2) as usual average salary is pumped up by the dollar salary
3) and unfortunately in India the trend of freshers going in for an MBA as a way of getting a job continues. An MBA is meaningful if you know the industry. A fresher might still do well, but jumping in without knowing how it works in industry will make sure you never enjoy your work..

Last year ISB Hyd's top offer was around Rs.1.05 crore. But the thing most chose to ignore was the guy who got that job had 5-6 years experience and was already earning close to 70 lacs 2 years prior

plus you convert dollar salaries into Indian rupees while working in US which looks grt on paper in India but not too grt in US.
