The minister said the examinations are a source of trauma for both parents and students. "There has to be an alternative system other than exams," Sibal said. According to the minister, since the students continued in the same school even after Class 10, board exams were not required. "I think we should not let the students and their parents go through this immense trauma at a such young age. I will be taking forward this proposal and will be discussing it with the state broads too. We already have NCERT recommendations on it and this not new. Many countries don't have exams but have a different form of assessment. For Class 12, it is different. We need to have exams because the students will be going into graduate colleges, but for Class 10, why should we have percentages when we can have percentile," he added. Sibal also mentioned that free and compulsory education will be made into a fundamental right within 100 days.
He also mentioned about implementation of a single central authority that will conduct and over see all exams in India (for higher education) and doing away of multiple exam controllers. Sibal also said that within 100 days, the government will enact new policy initiative to allow students at higher education to earn credits for multiple courses and degrees rather than bind them to any one course or line(so you can study both computer science engineering and Economics)
Lets see how much makes it for real ---------------------------------------------- |

Frankly i never liked grading system, not sure in what way this will reduce the trauma. The students will still have to be reading the same books.
I also heard that 10th standard exams would be made optional I don't know how this will work and i will comment on it only after i find out more about it

What it means, we don't know atm.
The students are anyway reading for competitive exams and as such bunking schools so it hardly matters. This year record number of students are going abroad just after 12th(Not graduation) so something had to be done.
The idea of grading, i think is good enough. I hardly think 99% is any different from 95% at 10th. It doesn't make much sense anyway.
Also they are floating an idea of percentile right now for 12th which would be a good idea as long as they rationalize the marking. If people are gonna get 100% anyway, then percentiles are meaningless.
Sibal has also mentioned that the curriculum of IIT's and IIM's will be made in line with industry demand asap.

I think it is a good move. I can tell you that UG in other countries is very good. They make you work harder, in India we get away with 4 years of utter crap in atleast 90% of the cases. Free and compulsory education, I just wish Sibal sticks to what he said.
I want the government to make sure that kids below the age of 14 aren't made to beg/work. If anyone is made to work, the parents and the employer should be jailed atleast for 3-6 months.
A major portion of tax should be utilized for education for the poor as well.

I guess some parents put too much pressure and in some cases the kids with interest in sports, music etc, are not able to devote time to this and thus they have a fear of failure.

They will continue to go abroad anyway The idea of grading, i think is good enough. I hardly think 99% is any different from 95% at 10th. It doesn't make much sense anyway. I think that is unfair. Imagine a student who has secured 99% losing out on a seat to a student who has scored 90%. Also a student who gets 89% will get a grade lower than a student who gets 90%, just for one percent. Numbers never lie and I think we should stick to them!
