New baby named Vista, after Windows Vista, Daughter named after Microsoft codenames
Daughter named after Microsoft codenames
By Jon on 11 June 2007
I don' think anybody has ever taken Microsoft brand loyalty quite so far as this: MVP Bil Simser has named his daughter after Windows Vista. If that wasn't enough, Vista's middle name, Avalon, is the codename for Windows Presentation Foundation. You can see her, complete with subversive iPod branding, on his site. The proud father points out that this sets his daughter in good stead for later life:
Her blog will contain the largest number of search hits with people looking for information about Vista
She has her very own carrying case (a laptop bag) and other personalized "logoware", most of which I can buy from the Microsoft store or any geek conference for the next 10 years
She'll be the only one at her school with a service pack (or two, or three, ...) named after her
If she's hot (and she will be) boys will make many crazy jokes about "starting her up" and "rebooting her" to which I will pummel them upside the head with an XPS laptop that I'll carry around to "interview" any potential suitors.
More seriously, he points out that they're nice names with non-computing heritages - and, more importantly, "Bottom line, we think it's a pretty name and it's hers for life. We like it, and she's our daughter not yours so deal." Plus, as he points out, by the time that she's old enough to be aware of where the name comes from Windows Vista will be replaced by the next version (currently under the eminently non-child-friendly moniker of Windows Seven.)
This is, as far as I'm aware, the first time a baby has been deliberately named after a Microsoft product - although there are plenty of people called Max, Memphis, and Bob - all of them Microsoft codenames or products.
Have you got any picks for Microsoft codenames that'd work as baby names? Could you raise a boy called Ajax (web technology) Kahuna (codename for the new Hotmail) or er, Photon (Windows Mobile 7.0)? Let us know in the comments.
