The supreme court had asked the government the basis on which the 27% had been decided and today while delivering an interim judgement halted introduction to the quota. The court said that there was no basis for deciding the quota based on 1931 figures and that there is no clear data on the OBC population.
The government has been asked to conduct a new survey and find out the number of population that comes under backward classes and who all qualify for backward classes reservation.
The court also launched an attack on the political class and made the following observation "India is probably the only country in the world where people actually want to be backward and want to be classified as backward class so that they can get reservation benefits." "Clearly the motive for this is political vote bank and which is wrong." "The court asked that if you give reservations like this, then where will the merit holder students go?" "Do not divide the country" - the most telling observation of today.
The court also fixed the next date for hearing in August effectively quashing this whole issue for a pretty long time.
The case is scheduled to go on with hearings. ---------------------------------------------- |

That is why we have brain-drain in India... Scholies who dun get admission in gud institutes in India choose to fly away for higher studies... Give them what they deserve nd they wil give to Nation what it deserves...

The court has clearly said that the government is playing votebank politics and is not interested in anyone's upliftment.

Yeah. The politicians are not going to like the SC verdict and this is going to lead 2 a facedown between the Judiciary and the legislative. A shame how a democracy is not being run from a parliament but from a Court!!
This could be huge setback for the Congress specially in view of the UP polls(which is honestly not expecting more than 30 of the 403 legislative seats). The UP polls are going to be a huge drama with almost every "caste" being wooed by the politicians. The indications are that the BSP and the BJP would lead singularly or in a combine they would do the best. Looking at how things are BJP is far better as it concentrates on already known divisive issues.
Well in India its a choice between evils and you have to choose the lesser one.

If the govt is REALLY concerned, let them give financial aid to poor OBC students who get in through general merit.
I am against quots completely. Even for SC/STs. Let the govt strengthen the lower education level to show it is really committed to the cause of the backward castes.... | | |
