Chinese officials orchestrated a huge turnout of pro-Beijing students for the Olympic torch's Australian appearance to swamp pro-Tibetan protesters, Canberra's top city official said on Friday.

Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister Jon Stanhope told Sydney's Daily Telegraph that Chinese embassy officials helped organise a crowd of more than 10 000 supporters for the torch relay's visit on Thursday.

True enough... Australia has always had a sizeable Chinese community, mainly in NSW and Victoria and it is regrettably easy to organise crowds to protest against anything in this country, (especially now we're stuck with a socialist government at both federal & state levels)... It's also true that the new Prime Minister is the ONLY leader of a western nation able to speak fluent Mandarin and given that Australia and China share a number of economic ties.. So I wasn't the least surprised to see pro-Tibetans overwhelmed by pro-China supporters and quickly bundled away by police... The only good thing to occur is that the so-called flame attendants kept a low profile..

Hate when politics overshadows what should be a remarkable sporting event, but it reinforces, (in my mind) why the Commonwealth Games, played with a spirit of friendly, sporting rivalry is the superior event, even if it isn't quite to the same scale, (not to mention the lack of one-upmanship & blatant corruption that goes hand-in-hand with many Olympic Games)

Of late, Government of India has been bending back ward to please Chinese Communist Party regime. This is what you get in response. Try to learn somehting from the past experience like 1962 war, Sumdhorong Chu Valley intrusion, Chushul/dhungti/intrusion, Bomdila adventure, bangladesh/Pakistan influence and so on. India - build up your self confidence and try to stand on your on foot

China allows international media only in china & not in Tibet,

As the earth quake took place,i see many coverage on how the people are in chaos, but when something happens in Tibet, they never allow the journalists inside Tibet. China makes excuse by saying that it's for the journalist's safety that they don't allow the media inside Tibet. Come on, cut the c r a p, Journalists are meant to take risk & get the information what they are suppose to,be it Iraq,Afganistan or any other life risk terrorised country. But The whole world knows Tibet's history & it's peacefull religion,so stop showing the world a picture what Tibet country is not about...

You china allow media only when you want to & what you want to show the world, right now u want to get world sympathy,& forget about Tibet's issue. But the way you communists handled the Tibet's uprising day incident, you are paying for that. Though it's realy really sad that the innocents are suffering. May god help the victim's family who still have to live under the communist brutal regime, who are never tired of praising themselves. They don't want people to elect their own choosed leader. The communist want to rule for ever even if they have to slaughter their own chinese voice which was & is against them. China must act as a true world power by initiating in talks with the Tibetan leaders in exile,That is in both interest. Unless china resolves the Tibet's issue,we believe china can never have a good global image. Though the whole world knows china invaded Tibet , still Tibet is asking for an autonomy which is a very reasonable demand or a reasonable request.

It is very partial that the international media is allowed only in the chinese areas & not in Tibet!

I don't understand why the media is covering the coverage what china wants to show to get sympathy for their chinese people & not for the Tibetans. That clearly reflects how much the chinese regime & their suppoters are scared about the Tibet's issue. That's the reason why they don't allow the International media inside Tibet, i guess that's why Tibet is also known as the prohibited land.

Very sad though

^^ Sorry to barge in but please don't make the argument that they did wrong so the suffering to their people is right. Its just a bad argument plus i don't think its Tibetan philosophy also.

There is very little anyone can do with what China decides. If they don't allow journalists inside China(Tibet) people just accept that. When they ban websites, filter results, its the same. Its not something they are doing for Tibet alone. Look back at the history and its done regularly for every issue(including now in the case of the Earthquake and conflicting reports over death toll). Its the basis for Communism, selective news release.

Having said that, Democracies like us suffer due to overdose of journalism, and many wish for some control too Nothing ever is perfect in the world.

As long as the Chinese continue to have the economic muscle power(which ain't going very soon) and the people of that country are relatively happy with the communists, it will be hard to rein in the Communists or make them see reason. (Btw Burma shows its hard even if they don't have economic muscle power, but Burma has tacit Chinese support)

Well what i want to make clear here is that chinese regime prefer their own chinese people commpare to Tibetans.Tibetans r always 2nd class treated in their own land. Safin insane wella! let me alert u that If u don't know the history of Tibet then please stop using china(Tibet)word. There is no similarity between china & Tibet,be it the food, clothes, faith, language, skin colour,& Most importantly our believe in the spiritual leader H.H.the Dalai Lama. Any way enjoy ur independence where as the Tibetans has to go long way.But Tibet's freedom is also very important to India cause India & Tibet share a very special bond which china can never replace Tibet. China's products r very cheap cause half of the productsr made in the force labour prison. & half of the products r made by the local chinese who r paid under rate. So my advice to the world is dump the trade with china.Though i live in Holland but i was born in India,& i m proud toay that my 2nd home is India,India who embraces any culture, any skin, any back ground.I am also proud to say that my 2nd mother language is hindi,I m more fluent in hindi than Tibetan. But my final destination is & will be Tibet where my blood & soul belongs.TIBET IS INVADED, SO STOP SAYING china(TIBET) lol.Any way India is birth place so i can't be rude or harsh even if i get offended by some comments, cause India isry special to me.I love bollywood movies,i watch bollywood more than hollywood movies, jokes apart. My fav.actor is Sharukh Khan & my fav.female actor is Sri Devi & Kareena Kapoor.

The decision by the IOC committee to award the 2008 games to Beijing was always controversial.Tibet & Free Tibet supporters warned even before the games were awarded that a country with China's record of human rights abuses was not appropriate host.
It's not the fault of the athletes that the games are being held in Beijing,How ever, any world leader or other high profile public figure who attends the opening ceremony or any of the other chinese govt. organised celebrations should be ashamed.
I stand for TIbet's right to determine it's own future,& this is my voice for an end to chinese occupation & for the Tibetan's human rights to be respected.

Angry Re: Olympic Torch Journey

On June 21st, the Blood Torch appeared in Lhasa. It was a predictably grim propaganda exercise, with dancing maidens, grinning nomads and unctuous PRC officials waving for the cameras. The select international reporters on hand witnessed a perverse celebration China's Tibet, a stubborn relic of the Cultural Revolution where party bosses flaunt their military muscle as they spit hateful denunciations of the Dalai Lama.

Communist Chief Zhang Qingli stood before pre-selected civilians and tens of thousands of PLA shock troops, proclaiming "Tibet's sky will never change and the red flag with five stars will forever flutter high above it" and "We will certainly be able to totally smash the splittist schemes of the Dalai Lama clique." Now tell me who is mixing game with politic????
