Saddam Hussein sentenced to death by hanging

Unfortunately while the verdict might be a correct one, coming from a puppet US sponsored government and court, this can only mean more trouble for US and seems stage managed.

Saddam Hussein, the former president of Iraq, has been sentenced to death by a Baghdad court after being found guilty of crimes against humanity.

When the judge announced the sentence, Saddam appeared shaken.

However he soon recovered and shouted: "Allahu Akbar!" [God is greatest] and "Long live the nation!"

Saddam was found guilty by the Iraqi High Tribunal on Sunday for ordering the killing of 178 Shia civilians in the town of Dujail in 1982.

The court said that he and his fellow defendants had ordered the villagers' murder after members of Dawa, a Shia political party, tried to kill Saddam in Dujail in 1982.

Saddam's sentence will be automatically appealed and reviewed by a panel of appeal judges, who will decide whether or not to allow a retrial.

If the judgement stands, however, Saddam must be executed within 30 days of the appeals panel delivering its verdict, the chief prosecutor has said.

Saddam, 69 said that he wants to be executed by firing squad. However Iraqi law states that he will be executed by hanging.

Saddam was president of Iraq from 1979 to 2003, when his Sunni-dominated government was deposed by a US-led invasion.

Eleven-month trial

Saddam's half-brother Barzan al-Tikriti, former head of the Iraqi secret police, and Awad Hamed Al-Bander, Saddam's chief judge were also sentenced to death by hanging by the court.

Saddam's eleven-month trial was marked by theatrics by both his defence council and by Saddam and his seven co-defendents.

As I just posted on TE, while I think he totally deserves the death penalty, I only wish it wasnt Bush who was imposing it....

yes, and it would just look bad for bush himself. Not in US maybe not, but all over arab woprld, this will not be greeted with enthusiasm.

He was pronounced guilty before the trial started.

Alas, the Bush Family would be very happy with the outcome - all the years of trials and tribulations have come to an happy ending.

Only thing though - between Bush's and Saddam we had Millions of innocent Iraqi's who paid the price with their life

just to show that the trial was fair, i reckon they have freed a guy and given 15 year terms to 3 guys.
good sham i must say

frankly for US's sake, it would have been better they had started the trial after they had left. inspite of best intentions on their part,(may or may not be) it will be taken as a sham.

Death isnt good. it'll just make him a martyr in the eyes of certain militants..
they should've given him life in prison. no use in having blood on your hands if someone else has done something wrong.

exactly my thoughts there.

it would have been much better if the trial would have been doen under new iraqi regime with no foreign troops lurking around.

saddam was defiant in his acceptance and he asked for firing squad but was refused.

the sentence is exress one ; to be implimented in 30 days, wish such fast mechanism prevails in india :sad:
