News Selecting the president, Indian Style

And i thought you can do that only with the Indian cricket team

0) Say that present president is incapable and should not continue even though he is the best president India has ever had.
1) Start the process by saying you want a consensus candidate.
2) Then start looking for a candidate
3) Even before the candidate is selected, the opposition party fields its own candidate.(Bhairon Singh)
4) Select the best candididate from among your own party (Pranab Mukherjee)
5) But if he is selected then there is no one of substance left in government.
6) Then select another guy whose going would mean no difference to the cabinet.(infact it would be a blessing) (Shivraj Patil)
7) Your supporting opposition party rejects the candidate on the grounds of poor performance.
8) A new name is thrown of a Raja, He is out of reckoning even before the process is started for links to the opposition(Karan Singh and his association with RSS )
9) Finally select a unknown candidate who no one knows and project the candidate as your president (Prathibha Patil, who happens to be Governor of Rajasthan) The Left supports the move even though we know nothing about her. The candidate herself is surprised about the selection. (In the words of a veteran journalist , its a political joke of the highest order)

So finally it looks like the former table tennis champion, 5 time MLA from Maharashtra, is all set to become the first women president of India.

Why can't we elect a non-politician for the first citizens post?

Actually few people know this, but even Kalam wasn't the first choice of Vajpayee. It was only after the original choice of NDA looked like it won't be able to garner enough votes, that on suggestion of SP chief Kalam's name was put forward.

Well and one can safely say that none of the politicians enjoyed his tenure. except the common people of India, but who cares about them.

Btw, i read somewhr tht APJ had once suggested a complete overhaul to the way the elections in india take place..he was in favor of a biparty election system in india like tht US...tht wud give the prez a lot of powers here..but the suggestion didnt go down well with the politicians..obviously cos tht'll rob them of all their near autocratic powers...they dont want the prez in india to be strong...
i say, then why keep the post?? scrap it altogether..its useless anyways here..

i think the way things are going in india, no party will ever win complete majority again...there'll always be coalitions like the ones now...and tht means giving into the demands of their contituent parties...things are getting from bad to worse..

The idea is to not have bi party rule but instead have a bi-coalition rule. Basically EC(election commission) has suggested that at the start of any pole, all the parties need to decide on which two blocks they wanna llign and there can be only those 2 main blocks. There was a meeting to this effect also i thing, dunno what happened.

President is important in recent times cos of the power to return the bill. Even though that can be over ruled by the government of the day, its never done as a mark of respect. thats why the idea is to get a sympathizer in the rashtrapati bhavan so that the embarrassing situation does not happen. (eg remember hte jharkhan situation where the UPA wanted to dismiss the government unlawfully but cos of Kalams opposition they could not)

I think tht rule shud be imposed by the EC anyways... all parties shud be allowed to form a coalition b4 the election..but once its done..there shud be no more manipulations like it happens nowadays...thts usually the time when crores of underground money switch hands just to win support... tht totally sucks..i mean, then what is the meaning of public voting?? ppl vote for a party...the losing side form a coalition with some others and gather more seats, form a majority somehow (which usually is unstable)...so whats the meaning of public opinion?? they dont get who they elect...this is no democracy..it simply means, those who have power and money can bend the rules anyways..
