Instinct is intelligence without reasoning. Intelligence cannot be anything else but an abstraction, since it only provides logical analysis and interaction with man's ability to learn in coping with the environment surrounding him.
If you have ever experienced doing something out of frenzy, something crazy, daring, even stupid or downright offensive - you know intuition precedes intellect. Instinct comes prepackaged with every single living organism - free of cost. Intellect requires interaction, gathering of knowledge, information processing and a lot of other shebang.
When an average soldier jumps in the middle of battleground to defend his country, it's not intellect but instinct. Chasing your dreams is intuition. Love is intuition, and so is hatred. When the masses voted Dubya back into White House, it wasn't intellect playing straight.
Intellect takes over instinct only in an ideal Utopian environment where there is free will.
