^^ The answers to above questions are not to be viewed from our viewpoint but from the viewpoint of those very people whom you are mentioning.

Competition might bring the best resource utilization, increase efficiency but try telling that to the persons who lost jobs. Look at US and BPO issue. Then look at the small vendors who get the basic money to live from their jobs and someone who is not even the native of the places comes over and takes it. Its important, and i keep repeating it, that per se this is against concept of one India but from the viewpoint of the person affected, he cares about his life first.

About your take on Maharashtrians, i implicitly mentioned that maybe not blatantly. Again their convenience is important cos they have been living like this for long. They won't suddenly start working. You mentioned rightly how people from Bihar come and slog 18 hours a day. Its plain obvious that the employers would prefer to give jobs to them. Now the average native thinks, that he was living a good life, worked 8 hours, spent time with his family and then these guys come in, no family around and take their jobs. They very obviously feel pissed.

See logical arguments don't make any sense to them. For them its simple. These guys came and took their jobs. For them these guys work so long cos they have no one to take care of in Mumbai(only family back home) and they also cause all sorts of housing problems in the city.

The debate should be of bring jobs and opportunities to every state and cities thereof. Low income group is always highly sensitive. The middle class and up isn't going to worry about places, they are increasingly cosmopolitan and grew up with the idea of globalization, but that doesn't hold for the lower strata's.

In Mumbai, or anywhere, there would be no state left where Maharashtrians would be accepted after this......or if this is gonna be the attitude of future govt. then we would be like outcasted from other cities of this country.

There is also a feeling that such people bring in customs(and i mean the bad ones) that degrade the existing practices that were being followed by the natives(no one looks at what good they brought, its the old saying, you notice and absorb the bad things faster than anything good). Plus the people who come might be desperate(they are for if they weren't they won't have come anyway)and they might be willing to do anti social, non honest dealings to survive which the natives might not(for anything right from finding a house to a job in the new place). There is some sense in what the natives say. But then Metros are like that world over.
I completely agree with you on this point.....
the city is already bursting at the seams and more ppl come to the city everyday and that is what is causing the problem for everyone...

I dont know how ppl will react to what i am going to say but i dont want to hurt any sentiments...

most the ppl coming into in mumbai are usually from north india and these ppl are hard working but they are also willing to make compramises to make money...they are willing to stay in crampped up rooms without proper sanitation...work odd hours....do any job that comes their way....
And in the proccess they end up getting the jobs n making more money than the natives and this is what irks the middle class....

If you go to dharavi the you'll find majority of the population are the migrants from other states...the daily wage construction workers again is the same story...

The politicians duly take advantage of the desparate state of these ppl by luring them with legal water supply n electricity in any shanti that comes up!! along railway tracks....on foothpaths...close to the airports...
Sometimes even legalising unauthorised slums in the process....this just invites more ppl to come into the city...
When such slums are to be demolised the politicians create a huge ruckass about the whole thing and claiming how mumbai belongs to the entire country and how everyone contributes to its growth!!

But does the Centre really care about the city?? The Central govt has majority representation from the northen states and the same govt has never really cared about Mumbai...its always been neglected.
Even the politicians representing the state dont give a damm about the city's or the state's condition and the worsing quality of life...no wonder the avg maharastrian feels aggrieved....

Look at the attitude of the taxi drivers in mumbai...most dont care where you want to travel...they'll want to ply on particular routes...and act arrogant at times....80% of the taxi drivers are north indians. I am not saying all taxi drivers are the same or all bad....but its a big issue in mumbai when you to wave to a stop a taxi and the driver refuses to go to your desitination or acts smart when you dont have change!
Is this a casual relationship? or is there more to it?

Even when looking at the situation from the healthcare perspective, if you where to survey the ppl coming to opds at govt hosp in mumbai you'd find a large no. of north indians....

This is proably because of the lack of adequate healthcare facilities in their homestates and who is to blame for that?? Mumbai cant provide for the entire country can it?

Coming to the civil service exams or the railways...why do north indians seem to get all the jobs? And talking of films why is that the kaamvali bai is always a maharashtrian? Why has such an image been projected of the local ppl?

This is what irks the maharashtrains...

And ppl saying maharastrians are not hard-working is in the same vein as maharashtrians saying north indians are the cause of all problems in mumbai...
You cant generalise like that....you have to go to other cities in maharashtra to get a true understaning of the marathi ppl...

All political parties need an agenda they cant survive without it...Shiv Sena and now MNS have been talking about the rights of the avg maharashtrain and they do have some valid points in there....i dont justify their means but there are some serious issues which need to looked into...

And ppl claiming Mumbai would come to standstill if the north indians left or were forced out...whats the basis of that? North Indians leaving Mumbai would create more problems for themselves than the city itself.....they might be an imp cog in the city but the city also does provide whatever it can for them...

And as was being said, the issue is not black and white. EVen though the majority feel that the city is for all Indians its not a big majority

NDTV.com: Mumbai belongs to everyone: NDTV poll

Quote:
If you ask only Maharashtrians, 61 per cent of them feel Mumbai is for all Indians.

Replying to the question - Do you think that Amitabh Bachchan favours UP over Maharashtra, 59 per cent of Mumbai residents say that Amitabh Bachchan is as loyal to Mumbai as he is to UP. However 41% did agree that he was more loyal to UP

If you take only Maharashtrians' responses, 54 per cent feel the same way.

When asked if Raj Thackeray was doing this simply to get political mileage?

Interestingly, 56 per cent of Mumbai citizens say Raj Thackeray's outburst against emigrants from North Indian outburst is genuine and not for political mileage.

And if you ask only Maharashtrians, 62 per cent believe Raj Thackeray is genuinely worried about North Indian emigrants in Mumbai.

And finally, the question: Who is Bal Thackeray true political heir? At least 39 per cent of Mumbai residents back his son Uddhav, while only 23 per cent back Raj as the true inheritor of Bal Thackeray's legacy.

Haha... Morons... No entry for trains from North India!!!

Quote:
NASIK: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has threatened not to allow trains coming from north India in Maharashtra if the north Indian leaders do not refrain from allegedly "provocative" speeches.

MNS leader Vasant Gite accused north Indian leaders of being responsible for the ongoing problems in Mumbai and other parts of the state with their "provocative" speeches.

The MNS corporator warned such "provocative" speeches like distributing lathis will not be tolerated.

Earlier, state Samajwadi Party chief Abu Azmi had said that "we will distribute lathis to north Indians".

Gite said "we have no objection if outsiders coming to Maharashtra to earn their livelihoods but they should behave well and should love and respect the state where they earn and prosper".

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party state unit general secretary and city President Mushir Sayyed said SP would give a befitting reply if anyone dared to attack north Indians (Visuals of violence in Mumbai) .

"I am proud of Maharashtra and it's wrong to create a rift between the people by indulging in regionalism just to gain political mileage".

Protest in UP against Raj Thackeray's comments

Activists of Samajwadi Party on Tuesday burnt the effigy of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray for his offensive against Amitabh Bachchan and North Indians and demanded his arrest.

Holding Thackeray responsible for clash between the MNS workers and SP supporters in Mumbai, the SP men demanded that a case should be registered against him.

The Congress party activists also staged protest against Thackeray's remarks and demanded de-recognisation of MNS as a political party.

In Bijnor, SP workers protested against Thackeray's comments by staging demonstrations and burning his effigy.

A large number of SP workers gathered near the collectorate, shouted slogans against Raj Thackeray and demanded his arrest under National Security Act for his alleged anti-national comments.

And yeah, here u go... Marathi family attacked in Ranchi...

Quote:
RANCHI/LUCKNOW: The Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) attacks on north Indians in Mumbai triggered violent protests in Ranchi, Lucknow and Patna on Tuesday, with Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party workers raiding a Marathi household in Ranchi and "ordering" the family members to leave Jharkhand.

Police, however, denied it. Equipped with bugles and drums, LJP workers raised slogans condemning Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and the attacks on north Indians in Mumbai. They were, however, detained when they entered the Mecon Colony in Ranchi.

Denying reports the Marathi family was attacked, Ranchi SSP M S Bhatia said cops had information about the rally and the protesters were detained "in time". Political activists, cutting across party lines, took to Gandhigiri at the Rajendranagar Train Terminus in Patna.

"Take these flowers with you and tell Raj Thackeray to stop spreading hatred," said Ashok Kumar, an NCP leader. "What is happening in Mumbai is wrong. The city belongs to everybody and every person has the right to live and work there," said an activist.
In Lucknow, chief minister Mayawati shot off a letter to PM, demanding the Centre's immediate intervention. The letter said the Maharashtra government had failed in its duty to provide safety and security to the people of Uttar Pradesh.

The UP chief minister's letter is seen as a move to counter rival Samajwadi Party's tactics. Other parties like RLD and BJP have also participated in the campaign to save people from Uttar Pradesh.
