PAKISTAN'S Master batsman Mohammad Yousuf on Thursday broke the 30-year-old World record of most Test runs in a calendar year during the fourth day of the third and final cricket Test against the West Indies in Karachi, with his ninth century in 2006.
Yousuf, playing in his 73rd test match for Pakistan, overtook former Windies skipper Viv Richards' 30-year-old record of 1,710 runs in 11 Tests in 1976 when he drove fast bowler Corey Collymore to the boundary through mid-on to reach 48.He went on to make his second century of the match and his ninth of 2006 to break the record and finish with 1,788 runs in 2006 from 11 matches
His nine hundreds this year, including six in his last five Tests, lifted his batting average to 56 in his 73rd Test and are also the most in a calendar year.On the first day of the match itself broke the record for the most centuries in a year, moving clear of Richards and Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva when he scored his eighth century the season.
It was his 23rd career ton and with 665 runs in all the best aggregate for a three-match series by a Pakistani, surpassing the 583 by Zaheer Abbas against India in 1978.
Yousuf said after play that he drew his batting inspiration from countryman Javed Miandad.
"I am delighted to be able to break Richards's record and to be ranked alongside him. He was the greatest player of the century," said Yousuf.
"Richards has been my favourite batsman, but my inspiration has always been Miandad. I have styled myself on him."
Yousuf ranked his 202 against England at Lord's as the most memorable of his eight hundreds of 2006.
He said: "I rate that knock very highly because it came at the home of cricket and it was a turning point for me to get a big score in an away Test."
