Australian press accuses Andrew Strauss of 'appalling cynicism'

Andrew Strauss has attracted some withering criticism Down Under for England's "appalling cynicism" in the final throes of yesterday's Test match in Cardiff.
Ricky Ponting accused England of failing to play the contest in the right spirit after the home team sent the twelfth man and physiotherapist on to the field of play with the match running out of time.
The Australian media, dominated by pictures of a scowling Ponting, views England's delaying tactics in the same light.

"Strauss is responsible for the fundamental fabric of the game, which has been tarnished as a result of his appalling cynicism. So whether to gratuitously attempt to waste time was his idea or not, he wears it," Malcolm Conn writes. "The England captain is either a weak leader or has no idea about the spirit of cricket."

More to the point, it's a damn good way of avoiding the criticism of not playing a paceman to knock off Collingwood instead of continuing with timewasting spin attack.....

Personally, I find the draw to be an insult in the face of a superb 1st innings effort, it isn't often that four individual batsmen make a ton plus... (even Captain Pout lifted his usual lacklustre performance), but then, he has to because if he becomes the only captain to lose an Ashes series twice, he is gone and none of his mates on the CA board will be able to save him...

But as far as the spirit of the game goes, it was perfectly acceptable Test cricket, it takes a fair degree of skill to make less than fifty runs in over four hours of cricket....
