Greg Chappell ends tenure with India

Greg Chappell, India's coach, will not be seeking an extension of his contract, which expired at the end of the World Cup. Chappell informed the board president of his decision on Wednesday, citing "family and personal reasons."

Chappell, 58, had served as coach since June 2005.

The decision follows India's early exit from the World Cup, and the resulting war of words in the media between Chappell and senior players. The BCCI had convened a meeting on Friday to review the team's performance in the Caribbean, which Chappell had been asked to attend along with a detailed report on his tenure.

However, the controversy seemed to boil over on Wednesday morning when The Times of India published an interview with Sachin Tendulkar - known for avoiding speaking on controversial topics - in which he made several sharp comments about Chappell.

In his letter, released to the media, Chappell, said, "I am grateful to the players with whom I have worked in this time for the challenges that they presented me with and which I tried to meet in a professional, methodical and interesting way in the interests of the team and the individual."

He went on to thank the support staff who worked with him for their efforts. "I would like to make special mention of my support staff without whom I would not have survived the rigours of the past 22 months," he said. "Ian Frazer and Greg King deserve special mention for their efforts as do John Gloster, S Ramakrishnan and Ramesh Mane. I am particularly grateful for the wonderful support of my family, especially my wife Judy, who has enjoyed the experience as much as I."

Chappell also had a word for the people of India who followed cricket so passionately. "The people of India deserve a special mention as they are the ones whose attention, enthusiasm and love and support drive the great game, and business, of cricket in this country, and around the world," he said. "I thank them all, especially those who have written to me and the thousands who have gone out of their way to come up to me with well wishes."

"I am also grateful for the opportunity to extend my knowledge and awareness of this region and for the wonderful friends that I have made here," Chappell wrote in his release. "I look forward to continuing my contact with India in the coming years and I wish Indian cricket and all those involved with it much joy and success in the future."

Chappell also thanked the media for the support he had received from them in the course of his tenure. "To the media, my thanks also for constantly forcing me to question myself, my thinking and the way I went about my job of guiding the team through the many tests that we faced."

Not that i didnt expect it... just saw it on the news..

Play Like The Aussies , Be Strong Like them, Learn from them ..

And wen u had the chance.. it was floored..

This is the tragedy of the indian sports.
No major title to be called ours (barring the shared champions trophy from the neolithic era)
one shd be able to understand y the indian team hasnt been able to perform..

Sachin has simply spoken out and made it confirmed that indeed the senior committe inside the indian team is worried.
Chappel had mentioned in his interview to Hindustan times abt attitude problem of Yuvraj, the same guy who stood like a rock in the natwest finals and now is no where near the fierce boy he came be be regarded as.

Greg spoke abt the true colors of the players.. like Ganguly, Yuvraj and now sachin .. y wd players not be interested in removing the flaws.
Ganguly did that and results were for all to see..

Just a lil effort was req by the players to understand the tactic and work on themselves.. and this team wd hv changed ..

Sachin did no good to his reputation by speaking out.. his recent scores do speak for themselves.. he made shit load of money and now if sm1 dares to say smthin abt him.. he does this instead of shutting up and waiting for the next game to come up ..

Well done Mr Maestro ..

^ Oh please dude, you have to look at who is pointing fingers at whom. Greg has always been surrounded by controversies, not only as a coach but even as a player. And for those of you who think sachin has not played good cricket, check for his stats in 2006-07. If you think chappell can get away by blaming others for the dabacle, then why do you think was he hired for(read Chappell's paycheck). And if you think sachin lacks the attitude and skill to play cricket then every person holding the a cricket bat or ball lacks it..

sorry mate..
not buying ur arguement on sachin ..

never been a fan of all d strategies of greg , bt to be very frank .. the indians really didn got the brains to tackle and use the man called as Greg Chappell..

We lost out on the last wrld cup cuz of bad strategy .. this time round no1 was prepared to look into himself .. all in all .. stiff attitude.
Who was doing it correctly .. ?? Ganguly leaked his suggestion.. so he was more careful and told media stuff b4hand.. now that is totality is not good.. bt who wd want to be the most wanted man in a Billion strong nation..?

Sachin says he wants to be a mature player.. all he has been doing is being mature against so so teams .. not one team wid a solid backbone has been whipped by him.. and i mean wid attitude we kno he has..

no one is ready to shift into a new mould.. if u fail to realise.. if u need to play to win the cup.. u fight fire wid fire.. u dnt go and hold a matchstick in front of a Torch..

I absolutely agree that chappell hasnt conceded that he is to be blamed equally .. bt bro .. jab apna sikka hi khota ho .. doosre ko kya kehna ..

Failure of abt 10 players on the field.. that too against bangladesh ... u want a coach to tell u hw to beat them too ..??

Apna sikka khota hai, agree, par ek nahi balki saare 11 sikke. Why pinpoint only sachin for what has happened. He was selected in the team as a player, just like others. If team didn't win it was not because sachin did not perform, but because none of them performed. The point to note is that Sachin was prolific scorer in all the previous three WC in which india performed above par. But this time he failed and so did the team. My argument is if Sachin is the only player we can depend on then why are the rest of them for?

Yes I agree that it is the players who to perform on ground, but don't you think it is more than a coincidence that india had worst ever world cup under greg chappell.

lameness indexx++ for gregy, even while leaving

1) he knows his days are numbered, so the wize guy gets an sms leaked to conveniently distract attention
2) The person is combative in the press conference immediately after WC loss. What does he think?? The person can't even accept failure. You cant blame it all on the players. The whole experimentation was on your behest.
3) Then he blames that he didn't get the team. What the hell did he want more? One guy gets knocked out of international cricket cos of him and makes a comeback and performs the best he can and the best man in the team. The only guys that were dropped were done cos they were not performing well for a pretty long time. Had we selected them(over say ganguly and sachin) i am pretty sure Bermuda win would hsave been in doubt and Bangladesh loss would have been quite massive. forget about Sri Lanka.
4) And finally blame it on attitude.
Yea i agree some guys have the prob in this team, none bigger so than the person who goes by the name of Greg chappell. For the time he has been with the team, he has always been at the center of controversy. All the time. And for non cricketing reasons too(shopwing fingers, saying dada plays for money and what not)He can blame anyone he wants but fact is he should and has been kicked out and he deserved what he got.
