End of the days for ODI cricket
"I'd certainly lay a large wager that eventually 50-over cricket will be rendered extinct."
-- Former England captain Michael Atherton
Atherton is right. I can see it. While most cricket fans will not exactly like it right now and will say on the contrary(the so called purists), the fact is that twenty20 is doing what ODI never achieved(forget tests), getting decent crowds in matches not involving your teams. Thats no surprize too considering its 3 hours of non stop hitting and action. There is no dull moment, no breaks, no time wastage. Go hit out and come back.
Atherton has hit the nail on the head when he said this:
"It has been everything that the World Cup in the Caribbean has not,"
"With spectators seemingly having riotous fun and the winners to be revealed in just over a week's time, it has looked like an event to be enjoyed, rather than a marathon to be endured. The appetite for Twenty20 is insatiable.
He added that the announcement of a lucrative global Twenty20 Champions competition for domestic teams to start in October 2008, could change the priorities for county sides.
Two teams from Australia, South Africa and England will play off against two from the Indian Twenty20 league for a 2.5 million pounds ($5.05 million) purse.
"The knock-on effects of this tournament haven't been thought through. With a $5 million dollar purse at stake, Twenty20 will suddenly become the most valuable tournament to win from a county player's perspective.
"Star players may well be rested from first-class games in order to be fit for the Twenty20 tournament."
And its a pure fact, there is big time money in twenty20. There is no real advantage to any team so it will allow newer teams to come forth and rub shoulders with the big boys (imagine that bloke from Holland in the last to last world cup who just demolished everyone singlehandedly in the first 15 overs, he in twenty20 and some other cronies and Holland ain't a bad team.)
When ODI started, people were at that time too circumspect about the future, and same is the casewith 20-20. However i am just guessing that its not a question of if but when ODI becomes extinct. 20-20 is here to stay.

Re: End of the days for ODI cricket
Test are still the best...esp if there is something for the bowlers....
T20 is something that i am not enjoying right now....i mean its just like for how long can you continue hitting...the bowlers are the just there to be hit all around...
But all said T20 will surely attract loads of ppl who wouldnt normally watch cricket.. its here to stay for sure...esp since loads of money is involved!!

Re: End of the days for ODI cricket
If the pitch has something for bowlers like in India - Pakistan match and like yesterdays SA - England match excitement of 20-20 can surpass everything.
And if the bowler is intelligent like Vettori in yesterdays game he can turn the game around.
I also agree to an extent that 20-20 will make ODIs go extinct.
If you get super entertainment in 3 hours flat, with exciting cricket, super duper music, dancing chicks and most important no need to take a leave from work you get a hit formula on your hands. Who will want to spend a full dull day waiting for results.
And a feather in the cap is Bowl Out. (especially if like in NZ-WI match it goes into the sudden death and even after 10 deliveries each side result remains undecided)

Re: End of the days for ODI cricket
Lol..to ppl like me, who have lost all interest in cricket, T20 is definitely a gr8 option...i wont be wrong if i say tht i've enjoyed watching cricket after a long time.. It dont matter which team wins, but watchin the ball out of the stadium 4-5 times in a over is definitely fun...
I too agree, if this remains the trend, ppl will forget test matches and one days after some years...
All said n done,T20 is the Action movie of cricket....!!

Re: End of the days for ODI cricket
The bad part will be
1) Hooligans will start coming into cricket
2) The trend will be to go for allrounders rather than bowlers. At the end of the day its the batsmen that will win matches.
3) Technique goers for a six. Its the sloggers that count here.
Imo T20 needs something for the bowlers.
