hairy mess
can't figure out how hair can still remain an elite panel umpire. Irrespective of however good he can umpire, the statement asking for cash in return for reignation is obnoxious. Frankly the only person who has now confirmed to have brought the game disrepute, is him.(might be inzy too but prima facia its hair himself)
The only reason he is still around imo is cos the guy happens to be an aussie and for some reason no one wants to annoy them
copied from reuters, the guy should have been sacked long time back
* A year after standing in his first test, Hair gave Craig McDermott out with a contentious caught behind decision off Courtney Walsh's bowling to give the West Indies a one-run victory in the fourth Test in Adelaide on Jan. 25, 1993. McDermott and Tim May had added 40 for the final wicket when Hair deemed the delivery to have brushed the fast bowler's glove contrary to the evidence of TV footage.
* Hair no-balls Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing on seven occasions during the Boxing Day test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in December 1995. Skipper Arjuna Ranatunga led his players off the field in protest only to return and bowl Muralitharan from the other end where umpire Steve Dunne was officiating.
* Hair describes Muralitharan's action as 'diabolical' in his 1998 autobiography, a charge which prompts the Sri Lankan board to ask the International Cricket Council to charge him with bringing the game into disrepute. He is stood down from a tri-nations series involving England, Australia and Sri Lanka and accuses Sri Lankan Board president Thilange Sumathipala of a 'smear campaign'.
* Adjudges Inzamam-ul-Haq run out by Steve Harmison in the second test against England in Faisalabad when the Pakistan captain seemed to be trying to evade the bowler's throw in Nov. last year.
* Hair and fellow umpire Billy Doctrove rule Pakistan bowlers have tampered with the ball in the fourth test against England at the Oval in August 2006. The umpires impose a five-run penalty for the infringement and decide the match is forfeited when Pakistan's players fail to return to the field in protest at the decision.
* A letter from Hair, later revoked, offering to quit in return for $500,000, is made public by the ICC who set up an executive board hearing into its contents to be held in Dubai on Sept. 2.

Re: hairy mess
Obnoxious yes, maybe this kind of practice is prevalent in most if not all sports bodies, its just that it never comes out in open.
"Cricket ceased to be a gentleman's game the day folks started playing it"
The more worrying factor out of all this controversy for me is the way people especially those in power have taken positions - 'Racism' is here to stay and that annoys me to no end.
Everybody wants their pound of flesh - Hair is no exception. Ultimately at max he would be dropped form elite panel, sooner or later this controversy would fade out from public/media glare and he would be back on elite panel. All this only if he does not get his $500,000

Re: hairy mess
The thing is if they remove him - you would have a game of "Tit for Tat" among cricketing nations.
Australia would pounce on any mistake made by sub-continental umpire and stage a walk out. Lets just say if this controversy flares up further West Indies should start worrying
But yes, i agree with you SN - only rational end to this controversy would be Hair taking the highway whether voluntarily or forced is immaterial.

Re: hairy mess
Latest news is Hair has apologized - so basically he just might get away with all this.
1. Hair goes scot-free. Remains on Elite panel.
2. Match result stays in England's favor.
3. Inzy + Paki's go scot-free on lack of evidence.
Everyone is happy

Australia v South Africa, February 1994
Three leg-before dismissals against his team-mates resulted in Peter Kirsten having an animated discussion with Hair. In the second innings, Kirsten himself was given out in the same manner and a further outburst ensued, with the batsman being fined 65% of his match fee.
Zimbabwe v New Zealand, September 2000
New Zealand were chasing 132 for victory on the fifth and final day of the match when Hair, officiating from square leg, no-balled Grant Flower three times in his second over.
Pakistan v South Africa, October 2003
Shaun Pollock was reported by Hair for showing dissent, and subsequently fined 100% of his match fee, after questioning the judgement of the umpire during the third ODI between Pakistan and South Africa at Faisalabad
New Zealand v Pakistan, January 2004
Hair and fellow umpire Billy Bowden reported Shabbir Ahmed, the Pakistan fast bowler, for a suspect bowling action. The report was made after reviewing footage of Shabbir's action taken during the fifth and final ODI between New Zealand and Pakistan at Wellington.
November 2004
Hair tells the ICC that he does not want to officiate in matches in Zimbabwe again.

Re: hairy mess
ahh good news fellows, MR hair is most likely to come to India now to umpire in the champions trophy (India should fix him to umpire India vs Pakistan match if that arises )
Darrell Hair expects to officiate in the Champions Trophy next month despite the unresolved issues from his decisions at the Oval Test. Hair told The Courier-Mail he was planning to stand in the tournament and an ICC source confirmed to the Sydney Morning Herald it was a "safe bet" Hair would be in India.
"Yes, I am down to umpire in the Champions Trophy and I expect to fulfill that appointment," Hair told The Courier-Mail from the Newmarket races in England. "I'm not sure what matches I'll be doing but I'm looking forward to it."'
