Re: IPL - Indian Premier League
Conflicting reports in the media about the Knight Riders
First we have this news.
News Today - An English evening daily published from Chennai
After all the breathless hype and calculated hard-sell, the bitter truths of IPL coming home to haunt many franchise owners. And it is: Profitability is a far cry.
It is not as if these franchise rights holders stepped into the IPL bandwagon for quick bucks.
.
They knew the break-even point itself was some years away.
But after running the hard yards over the two months, many of these companies and individuals are said to have become sceptical about the profitability of their ventures.
To put things in perspective, according to reports, Sharukh Khan’s Knight Riders, apart from losing matches on the field, has been losing anywhere between Rs 50 to 75 lakh per match’.
So much so, even a born optimist like Sharukh is said to be thinking on selling his franchise rights for next year.
According to reports reaching here from Mumbai, Sharukh has confided with his associates and friends that the whole venture has not been so rewarding.
Interestingly, Sharukh, who has also decided not to attend his team’s next match at the Eden Gardens, has ‘smsed’ his team players about what he felt of the IPL campaign.
‘So, right now, all of us have become part of a failed script... A bad IPL script.... Let’s try and keep our characters worthy of still looking back at this story and remembering it as a special story becos we all worked very hard at this...,’ a part of the SMS reads.
The SMS’s main burden was, however, about clarifying that there was no issues or misunderstanding between him and Sourav Ganguly (Knight Riders’ captain) and John Buchanan (the coach).
While spontaneously backing his team to go out on a winning note (Knight Riders are almost out of the IPL semi-final reckoning), Sharukh exhorted his beleaguered team thus: ‘We have nothing to lose now, except our character.... Let’s not lose that.’
While Sharukh, a genial and understanding boss, has played his cards in a gentle and professional way, many other franchise owners are not ready for sweet-talking and poltically-correct euphemisms.
A couple of franchise owners (whose teams are out of the IPL) have also started scouring the market for escape route.
But NDTV is reporting this today
CRICKETNDTV.com: SRK's IPL team may top profit charts
The Kolkata Knight Riders may have disappointed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but King Khan's team is sitting pretty on one throne at least. They are certain to become the first team to post a profit in the first year of the tournament, and no it's not just because of Shahrukh Khan but also some very wise marketing decisions.
Shahrukh Khan has certainly been the owner that everyone would die to play for in the IPL. The gift-giving continued despite the fact that the Knight Riders only beat two top ranked teams in the tournament. Four of their six wins came against Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Average results though have certainly not translated into below-average bottom lines for Shahrukh's team. KKR as they are called, have bucked all industry estimates and will post a profit this year. And much of the credit for that goes to its owner bringing his personal sponsors on board.
This is how the math works out. Kolkata's main expenses are franchise fees of 31 crore a year, 20 crore on players and another 20 crore on other administrative costs. That makes their outflow about 71 crore.
What Kolkata gets back is about 24 crore from the share of TV rights money that the IPL got from SONY. About 15 crore of the central sponsorships like DLF and Vodafone and another 20 crore in gate receipts.
This is where the Shahrukh factor kicks in with sponsors like NOKIA, HDIL, Tag Heuer, Reebok, Belmonte, Anand Bazar Patrika, Zapak and, Hungama all ploughing in between 4-8 crore each for a total of about 32 crore. That drives the inflow up to 89 crore which makes the profit at least 16 crore.
Most of these figures are based on estimates and will probably change when the final balance sheet is done but Shahrukh is quite confident that he has made enough money to think of his venture as a success, so much so that he wants to plough back some of the profits into a Knight Riders academy in Kolkata.
"But I had actually miscalculated the Kolkata public. I thought we would make an X amount of money with the gate receipts that we get, I am very happy to say that we have twice that amount and even more so at the end of it all being in Kolkata sees us through this with a lot of comfort. So I thank Kolkata... it's only because of the crowds at the Eden Gardens," said Kolkata team's owner Shahrukh Khan.
The Bollywood Badshah gets much of the credit but plenty has to go to the marketing whizkids whom he hired, which included the head of a sports syndication company and a former head of production from ESPN.
Incidentally Rajasthan are the only other team that will break even in the first year but that's because they are the cheapest franchise, which bought the most economical players. Moreover, they have spent half of what Kolkata did on advertising.

Re: IPL - Indian Premier League
i have doubt about the profitability in first year.
as the sponsorship amount must be linked to a multi year contract and payments must be over a period of time.

Re: IPL - Indian Premier League
I guess the huge capacity of Eden Gardens surely helps with the ticket revenues
Add to that SRK's premium league sponsors, i actually think there might be some truth in this.

Re: IPL - Indian Premier League
Anyways its goodbye to Mumbai Indians.
After being the costliest franchise and also a star studded lineup they could not make it to semifinals.
Add to it harbhajan`s short temper resulting in Slapgate did not help them either.
With a team crumbling in the last minutes of game repeatedly like they did in last 3 games do not deserve to be in knockout games either. The lessons are to be learnt from first year experience and they can come back stronger next time.
What the 4 teams which got eliminated need to do is find some good local talent and groom them specially in bowling department.
If you analyse closely the teams which succeded in making to the knockout stages baring CSK had good local talents which were slotted excellently in their role by the team management.
its
Chennai Super Kings V/s Kings XI Punjab
Rajasthan Royals V/s Delhi Daredevils
Lets rock the bets knoughty where are you?
superkings against only kings
while royal will bare against daredevils
