Veteran fast bowler Glenn McGrath was recalled on Monday to Australia's expanded squad for the ICC Champions Trophy in India.
The 36-year-old paceman missed tours to South Africa and Bangladesh after his wife, Jane, was diagnosed with a recurrence of cancer. He may yet opt to play domestic first class cricket to regain his fitness rather than the limited-overs Champions Trophy tournament.
"It is a work in progress, the selectors and Glenn continue to talk about the most appropriate time and place for his return to cricket," a Cricket Australia spokesman said.
McGrath is desperate to return for the five-test Ashes series against England starting at Brisbane in November, hoping to make amends for Australia's loss in England last year.
Test opener Matthew Hayden was also included in the 30-man preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy, but McGrath's former new ball partner Jason Gillespie has again been overlooked.
The final 14-man squad will be announced September 7. The world champion Australians are hoping to play a tri-nation series against India and West Indies in Singapore and Malaysia next month to fine-tune for their Champions Trophy campaign starts October 18.
"There is a lot of experience in the squad which reflects the fact that Australia has been on top of the international one-day game for some time," chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said in a statement.
Experience is blended with a group of exciting young players who have largely been involved in the Australia A Top End Series recently and have come through the academy program.
