Rep Power: 86 Shillings: 29 | | If there was ever a doubt where the international cricket is heading, then have no doubts now Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have confirmed they are planning a multi-nation franchise-owned Twenty20 tournament based on the IPL, which they hope to launch by 2011. The idea is to have city-based teams and schedule it at a time that would allow Indian stars to take part.
The concept will involve two separate conferences - an eastern division based in Africa and a western division in Australasia - and the top sides from each will progress to the finals. It will not replace the existing domestic Twenty20 competitions; instead it is most likely to be held in October with each nation free to also retain their state- or provincial-based tournaments. Ok so basically we will now have this, the IPL, ICL??, The stanford T20 and a English T20 league from 2011. Now where is the time left for ODI and forget ODI, the 5 day boring test cricket. At this rate i envisage only the oldies guys who are 35+ playing international test cricket while the younger guys will just play T20.
Looking at the viewership of the current India-Australia test series and compare that to IPL, looks like future is T20 with ODI for sure on a deathbed. ---------------------------------------------- |

Test Match Cricket would die after this. Even India pakistan series isn't interesting these days with "useless fellows" playing against "useless stars" .
But T20 would change things around, but I don't see Test Cricket dying
The amrus just can't beleive that ppl play for 5 long days?

I feel these tourneys will result in overdose of T20 and eventually kill the game. Probably they should take a cue from how the other sports' governing bodies like FIA and FIFA operate. I don't see them giving all these leagues a official tag. Apart from the leagues mentioned by Safin above, the PCB is also planning to launch its own t20 tourney modelled on the IPL. Other than Srilanka every test playing nation wants to form its own club based t20 tourneys. |

Everyone agrees cricket is not growing outside of the subcontinent(and even here as we start doing well in otehr sports cricket will suffer) and a club level short game will help cricket.
What this will do however is that T20 will be the only game that will be popular soon. It will spread to include most countries of the world but at expense of ODI and test cricket.

Rep Power: 86 Shillings: 29 | | Re: New T20 League in the offing! The point is that with so much of cricket, who will play test cricket. Sure it might not die as long as the current crop of cricketers are there but the new lot will come out thinking only about T20 and for them T20 would be the ultimate cricket.
Add to that the possibility that T20 has the potential to be embraced by a lot more number of countries and so will represent a better worldwide sport and naturally will attract more players.
After all that T20 who will have the stamina left to play 3 or 4 match test series? "I'm disappointed all the countries want to copy the IPL. Why can't they embrace India and sell the brand worldwide?"

Oct 23, 2008 If i hadn't read who had made the quote, i would ahve thought its Lalit Modi. But then again, its no surprise that the guy making the quote represents Lalit Modi's home team.

Rep Power: 36 Shillings: 474 | | Re: New T20 League in the offing! Playing in India has given Shane Warne a new lease of life, (cricket-wise), as it has for a few other boys as well, (only Roy, failed to capitalise on his experience in IPL).
But I think Shane has also recognised what many have been saying for a longtime, in that India, as the dominant force on the sub-continent, is going to be the saviour of the great game....
If we have other nations, such as Holland, UAE, Canada, Hong Kong, that can only be to the good of all.............. I'll be honest, i don't really want to see Amrika involved in playing cricket, not that I believe they have the temperament for it anyway.... |

Rep Power: 70 Shillings: 100 | | Re: New T20 League in the offing! ^ I think they'll start playing 20-20 soon
If that happens, baseball will take a big hit, cos both the games are similar and amrikans will be able to understand the game quite well. Soon, (read 5 to 10 years) many nations will be playing 20-20. They are planning to propose 20-20 cricket for 2020 olympics, if that happens, then rest assured, many more nations will pick it up
20-20 on the global level would be just toooo cooool
