And i am not too sure that there was ever an obligation to make the Icon Player necessarily the captain of the team. VVS relinquished his iconic status but remained the captain.

Re: Mallaya Slams Dravid, Charu
^On one side you say that the royal challengers is a test team not suitable for T20 and then you appoint Kumble ( Test captain of India ) as captain ?

Re: Now Kumble Slams Mallya
Anil Kumble has come in full support of Dravid and has subtly slammed Mallya for being a joker
Anil Kumble has firmly backed Rahul Dravid, the captain of the Bangalore Royal Challengers, and said it was time "people who matter" understand what sports is all about.
Kumble's statement comes in the wake of the comments made by Vijay Mallya, the liquor baron who owns the franchise, where he defended his decision to sack Charu Sharma, the CEO, and also said his biggest mistake was to trust Dravid on matters of team selection.
"What's important though, is that at this time, you need all the support and backing you can get," Kumble wrote in his column for Hindustan Times. "You need the people around you, the people who matter, to understand what sport is all about, to realise that no one goes out there to lose.
"What's unfortunate is that, invariably, everyone starts pointing fingers at the captain. So it stands all the more to reason that people within the camp then stand up and say 'we believe in you and your team'. That's what's most important in this kind of situation. I do understand that the IPL is different and there is a corporate look and feel to the whole concept. But having said that, at the end of the day, it is a cricket match - one that a cricketer does not want to lose."
As i said, Mallya is one big joker and its about time someone told him what he is. Ifyou don't know a sport, don't enter it. Its not wine selling, its not about the girls, its not about the parties, its a game he cannot understand
Cricinfo - Kumble comes out in support of Dravid

Re: Now Kumble Slams Mallya
I do not totaly agree with the fact that the fault is with the team. Here are a couple of reasons:-
1. Take a team like DC the team appears to be an unbeatable T20 team on paper, but we can see the result, what I mean is it is not the players but their performance that counts.
2. The myth that this is a young man's sport has gone down the drain look at the performances, be it the bowlers or the batsman, most of them are on the wrong side of 30. Out of the total centuries made, barring McCullum, all the other batsman are more than 30. The best bowlers in the tournament is turning out to be McGrath and Warne.
3. About the players not being in their national teams, you know that their could be other reasons than fitness not to make into the national side.
4. Malaya should not have critisized the team selection and the captain during the tournament. He could have gone on to dump the team afterwards and made the statements that time.
Finally what I wanted to point out that it is not the names that wins, it is the performance.
