Sourav Ganguly made a come back to the team while Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan were left out of the 15-member squad announced on Friday in Rajkot for the first two One-Day International matches against West Indies beginning later this month.
The national selectors announced the squad for the first two ODIs against West Indies and a preliminary 30-member squad for the 2007 ICC World Cup in the West Indies in March.
Rahul Dravid has been retained as captain while Sachin Tendulkar has been named the vice-captain.
Karnataka’s Robin Uthappa has been included in the ODI squad.
The selectors have sent a strong message to all players by not including Sehwag’s name in the list for the first two ODIs. He had earlier been stripped off vice-captaincy following his poor performance during most part of last year.
VVS Laxman, who had been made the vice-captain for the three Tests against South Africa, has not found his name for the first two ODIs.
Anil Kumble remained out of favour and did not find a place in Team India again. He had been missing from India’s ODI matches against South Africa and was called only for the Tests.
Left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh, who is recuperating after a knee injury, also did not find a mention in the ODI squad. He, however, is there on the list of 30 probables for the World Cup.
The World Cup is to be held in the West Indies in March-April.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has kept January 13 as a cut-off date for all participating nations to send their list of 30 probables with the final 15-member squad to be named by February 13.
