Monty Panesar faces racial abuse
Monty Panesar's worst fears have come true. Just a few days into the Ashes series, he has been subjected to racial abuse by the Sydney crowd during England's game with New South Wales.
Standing near the boundary fence under the Clive Churchill Stand, this is what Monty heard loud and clear from a group of spectators on the opening day of the match: “Give us a wave, Monty. You can’t speak English, you stupid Indian, I’ll have to say it in Indian. What are you doing playing in the English side, you’re not English.”
While England are yet to lodge a complaint officially, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph has reported that both Panesar and Kevin Pietersen, who is of South African origin, were abused by spectators during England's opening game of the tour in Canberra last Friday, following which eight people were evicted from the ground for unruly behaviour.
This, after counselling for Monty from team psychologist Steve Bull and former England left-arm spinner spinner Phil Tufnell, and words of caution from South African captain Graeme Smith and Australian skipper Ricky Ponting. The South African team had complained about similar racial abuse.
It may be recalled that, amid concerns about Monty facing racial abuse, Australian PM John Howard had assured the spinner that there was nothing to be afraid of.
