Bappi Lahiri to compose music for Verma’s version of Sholay


The legendary composer R.D. Burman had given music to the blockbuster super hit Sholay way back in the 70’s. The remake of the magnum opus is being done by Ram Gopal Verma, who has signed none other than the disco king Bappi Lahiri to compose music for Verma’s version of Sholay.

Bappi, who has already recorded two tracks for the movie, looks upbeat about working with Verma. “I met Ramuji two years ago at a private party and he expressed his desire to work with me. He wanted to use my type of music as a title track in one of his films. But things did not work out. This time, when he approached me for Sholay, I readily agreed,” says Bappi.

Meanwhile, Bappi has been all praises for the film-maker and rates me highly both as a director as well as a music expert. It took me four days to finalise the track. He wanted me to compose an original soundtrack,” says Bappi. “He allows creative liberty and doesn’t interfere beyond a point, but only if he is confident about the music. He might give a suggestion once, but that’s it. He has a very good ear for music and when I implemented his suggestions, there was a definite improvement in the track,” admits Bappi.

So, will Bappi dada be able to recreate the magic of R.D. Burman in this remake? Only time will tell.
