Karan Johar's Wake Up Sid ran into controversy as soon as it opened in theatres on Friday after activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) stopped its claiming that the film hurt the sentiments of Maharashtrians by referring to Mumbai as "Bombay".The trouble started in Pune, where the screening of the film was stalled by MNS activists, on Friday. MNS activists also held protests at some cinema halls in Mumbai.Lead actors Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma call the city "Bombay" 10-12 times in the film.

As soon as he learnt of the trouble Film maker Karan Johar immediately meet MNS chief Raj Thackeray and apologised for "hurting his sentiments", explaining that the script demanded so.Johar said he explained to the MNS chief that youngsters refer to Mumbai as Bombay and the film portrays this "realistically".Johar has promised Thackeray to carry a disclaimer before every screening, "apologising for using 'Bombay' instead of Mumbai."

We apologised to him in case his sentiments were hurt. We are very sorry if we have hurt sentiments of other people. That was never our intention.
As soon I learnt about the protests, I decided to pay a visit to Thackeray to explain why we have kept 'Bombay'.Raj was very cordial and explained to us where he came from.We understood his point of view

Raj Thackeray said the protest has been withdrawn after Johar's apology and assurance to make the necessary change in the film.The MNS withdrew its protest by evening.Raj also said to the reporters after meeting Johar at the former's residence in central Mumbai

The film industry henceforth should be careful while taking name of Mumbai in any film

CM Ashok Chavan disapproves of Johar apology to Raj Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan tonight disapproved of film maker Karan Johar apologising to MNS chief Raj Thackeray over the use of word 'Bombay' instead of 'Mumbai' in his just released film 'Wake Up Sid".Ashok Chavan on termed Karan Johar’s apology to MNS chief Raj Thackeray as a "filmi stunt".

Chavan said Johar should have approached the police and the government if he had "any problem."

Idiotic stuff like this can happen only in India. Publicity mongers. And raj is only hurt by such meaningless stuff but not by the daily farmer suicides in Vidarbha. Or maybe he doesn't know that part lf the state also belongs to Maharashtra

Half the world will, on occasion call Mumbai - Bombay, for the most part, it's an instance of honest slip of the tongue, rather than something premeditated or malicious....

Likewise with Burma, who calls it Myanmar?? (especially television journalists, hardly the most linguistic of people)...........

MNS - I agree, why should KJO apologise to these miscreants, considering the trouble they've either caused or been linked to over the years...

Yes, Kakamuchee and Galajunkja are few names that were used to refer Mumbai.
