Default Re: Champions League 2009-10

Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka have sought to temper the growing anticipation that this is going to be Real Madrid's year in Europe.

Madrid have failed to get beyond the first knockout stage of the Champions League in any of the last five seasons, but few believe it will be a similar story this time around following a record-breaking summer spending spree and a flying start to the new campaign.

Buoyed by the arrival of superstars such as Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso, Madrid have won all six of their competitive games so far, scoring 21 goals and conceding just four in the process.

That has increased expectations that Madrid can seriously challenge last season's treble winners Barcelona this term, and it is the Champions League that is attracting most interest.

Madrid have long been hunting for a record 10th European Cup crown, and with this year's final being held at their Bernabeu home, that quest has taken on extra significance.

However, speaking ahead of the new-look Madrid's first European home match of the season, Kaka has attempted to inject some realism into the situation, saying: "It's not easy to win the European Cup, everyone is talking about it a lot and it seems as though Real Madrid are already in the final - the team still has to grow and improve on many things.

"We are thinking about winning and making history with Real Madrid, but we have to have a little calm," added the Brazilian, who won the competition with AC Milan in 2007.

Ronaldo, who also has a Champions League winner's medal after helping Manchester United to glory in 2008, echoed those thoughts, adding on his club's website: "The fans are understandably excited about this new project, but as Kaka has said well we have to take it step by step, thinking about things game by game.

"The Champions League is a very difficult competition. We want to win it, but success doesn't happen overnight."

Madrid, who yesterday announced the renewal of their sponsorship deal with bwin, which has been extended until 2013, will be looking to make it two wins out of two in Group C having beaten FC Zurich 5-2 away in their opening match.

France midfielder Lassana Diarra, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Christoph Metzelder and Alvaro Arbeloa all miss out for Manuel Pellegrini's side due to injuries.

The Spanish giants could come up against a couple of familiar faces in the Marseille squad, with Fernando Morientes and Gabriel Heinze both now at the French club and included in Didier Deschamps' 20-man travelling squad.

Spaniard Morientes won three Champions League medals in eight years at Madrid, while Argentinian Heinze spent two years at the Bernabeu before moving to Marseille this summer.

Morientes told OM.net - Site officiel de l'Olympique de Marseille "This will be a special moment, very special. I'm going to play against Real Madrid, a club where I spent nine years, but I prepared like any other match.

"To get motivated against teams like Real or Milan is easy."

Marseille lost their opening Group C match 2-1 at home to AC Milan but Morientes believes a win at the Bernabeu is possible if they can hit Madrid on the break.

He said: "I think their weakness is, especially at home, when they attack, because they attack with four or five players and it is precisely then that the opposing team can find the space to score.

"I think we can hurt them like that.

"This will be terribly difficult, but I have complete confidence in what we can do."

^ I didn't see the match, was watching Liverpool being steam rolled by fiorentina BTW United won 2-1 against Wolfsburg. Bad news is that Owen's groin has given up yet again But the good news is that Giggs is far from finished

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to score for Real Madrid while Ryan Giggs did what he does best for English champions Manchester United.

Ronaldo added another two goals to his growing Real Madrid collection as the Spanish giants continued their barnstorming start to the season by seeing off 10-man Marseille 3-0 with a second-half blitz at the Bernabeu.

Madrid struggled to make any headway in the opening period, but three goals in six second-half minutes from big-money signings Ronaldo (two) and Kaka ensured Manuel Pellegrini's men a seventh successive competitive victory this campaign.

However, Marseille will be angry about the 60th-minute refereeing decision that left them down to 10 men and gave Kaka the chance to double Madrid's lead from the penalty spot, with Souleymane Diawara being penalised for a hard but seemingly fair sliding challenge on Ronaldo.

That tackle earned Diawara his second yellow card and Kaka rolled home the resulting spot-kick to leave Madrid in total control and well on their way to a second successive Champions League triumph following their 5-2 win over FC Zurich.

But while Madrid remain in cruise control, Group C's other big name suffered a shock defeat with AC Milan losing 1-0 at home to FC Zurich.

A classy goal by Finnish defender Hannu Tihinen piled on misery on coach Leonardo as the Rossoneri's struggles continue.

Tihinen got behind Milan Gajic's cross from the right and back-heeled the ball into the back of the net after 10 minutes.

Ryan Giggs' 150th goal for Manchester United rescued the Red Devils as they came back from a goal down to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Edin Dzeko had given the Germans a shock lead, but Giggs' deflected free-kick levelled matters before Michael Carrick won it 12 minutes from time.

Also in Group B, CSKA Moscow put their defeat to Wolfsburg behind them to see off a late spell of pressure from Besiktas and claim a 2-1 victory at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Alan Dzagoev, who was on target in the 3-1 defeat to the Wolves, gave CSKA an early lead with his superb seventh-minute strike before Milos Krasic made it two in the second half.

Besiktas finally put together some meaningful possession in the last few minutes, capped off with a memorable finish from Ekrem Dag.

Chelsea stuttered to an unconvincing 1-0 victory over Apoel Nicosia thanks to a first-half goal from Nicolas Anelka.

The Blues, hammered 3-1 by Wigan in the Barclays Premier League last Saturday, produced another lacklustre performance against the Cypriot champions.

But victory keeps Chelsea top of Group D with a 100% record, even if the performance does not bode well for their home clash with title rivals Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Second-half goals from Falcao and Rolando secured Porto a deserved win against struggling Atletico Madrid in Group D's other game.

Falcao opened the scoring with a neat back-heel 15 minutes from time and Rolando snaffled a rebound to clinch the points seven minutes later after a fine save from substitute goalkeeper David De Gea.

The result earned the Portuguese side a first pool win following their opening loss to Chelsea, but heaped further misery on Abel Resino's visitors. Atletico lie in La Liga's relegation zone and were booed off the pitch after being held to a goalless draw by minnows Apoel a fortnight ago.

Bayern Munich were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Juventus in a largely one-sided Champions League encounter at the Allianz Arena.

Juventus will be the happier of the two sides after emerging with a point despite a dominant Bayern performance in the first period, with Franck Ribery pulling the strings and carving out the hosts' best chances from the midfield.

The stalemate leaves Bayern on four points but still top of Group A after two matches, while Ciro Ferrara's Juve are third in the standings after their second draw in succession.

Bordeaux moved up to second as they picked up their first win, making hard work of beating Maccabi Haifa 1-0.

The French champions began the night as favourites, but the game could have gone either way in the first half.

Bordeaux were much improved after the break, but still had to wait until seven minutes from time for Michael Ciani's header to settle it.

Maccabi ended the game with 10 men as Baram Kayal's frustrations got the better of him and he was sent off three minutes from time.

Match Reports

Manchester United 2-1 Wolfsburg

Apoel Nicosia 0-1 Chelsea

Real Madrid 3-0 Marseille

AC Milan 0-1 FC Zurich

Bayern Munich 0-0 Juventus

Porto 2-0 Atletico Madrid

Bordeaux 1-0 Maccabi Haifa

CSKA Moscow 2-1 Besiktas
