With the football world eagerly awaiting the start of Euro 2008, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Portugal and Turkey are the first teams off the block. Here's some things you may not know about this particular quartet of hopefuls.


SWITZERLAND
On the two occasions that Switzerland have qualified for the European Championship finals (1996 and 2004), the Swiss opened their tournament account with draws before slumping to two defeats in their group matches.


CZECH REPUBLIC
The Czech Republic had the ignominy of being the first country to feel the full force of the golden goal's potency after the system was introduced in 1996. Germany striker Oliver Bierhoff's header during extra time meant the Germans won the final against a heartbroken Czech outfit.


PORTUGAL
During the 2004 European Championships, hosts Portugal had the unique record of opening their account with a loss to Greece, then winning all their other matches only to stumble once again the Greeks in the final.

TURKEY
Whilst Turkey have taken part in all 13 of the qualification rounds for the UEFA European Championship, they only actually made their debut in the finals proper in 1996.
