Real Madrid preserved their 100% record with a win at Espanyol to join rivals Barcelona at the top of the Primera Liga table.

Esteban Granero, Guti and Cristiano Ronaldo bagged the goals to give Manuel Pellegrini's side a somewhat flattering win against an Espanyol team playing their first competitive match at their Cornella-El Prat stadium.

The Catalans were determined to turn it into a tribute to their former captain Dani Jarque, who died of a heart attack last month.

In the stadium's inauguration, Jarque had led the team out and starred as Espanyol beat Liverpool 3-0.

But he was dead less than a week later and there was a minute's silence in his honour before kick-off.

That was to be expected.

But what was not expected was the sight of the world's most expensive player warming the Madrid bench.

Ronaldo was left out by Pellegrini, along with Raul and Lassana Diarra, but the Chilean coach was surely thinking ahead to Tuesday's Champions League clash with FC Zurich in Switzerland.

Their absence meant a chance in the starting line-up for Guti, Granero and Gonzalo Higuain in a rather different Madrid XI.

But summer signings Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso all started in what remained a dangerous-looking Madrid attack.

As it was, though, the opening goal almost came from the unlikeliest of sources after five minutes, when Christoph Metzelder blasted a left-foot shot over the bar from close range.

Espanyol were also looking dangerous early on and the Catalans could have gone ahead after 20 minutes but Iker Casillas did well to save Moises Hurtado's right-foot effort after the midfielder was set up by Luis Garcia.

Joan Verdu then went close for the home side and Raul Tamudo almost made contact with an Ivan Alonso cross as the locals gave as good as they got.

Alvaro Arbeloa was then forced to clear desperately with Alonso set to pounce.

But Madrid weathered the storm and, after Benzema had shot wide and Carlos Kameni produced a brilliant acrobatic save to deny Marcelo, Granero gave the visitors the lead.

The midfielder, who came through the Madrid youth system but has spent the last two seasons at Getafe, slotted home a clinical angled drive following a neat one-two with Kaka.

It was the first ever competitive goal at Cornella and the player raised his hands skywards in a tribute to Jarque.

Just before half-time, Moises could have levelled for Mauricio Pochettino's side but drilled a low effort just the wrong side of the post.

New Espanyol captain Ivan De La Pena, who is still short of fitness following injury, came on for Shunsuke Nakamura at the break.

But Espanyol were struggling to break down their illustrious visitors and there were few chances of note until late in the game, although Tamudo came close to connecting with a miscued shot from substitute Ferran Corominas with 20 minutes left.

Ronaldo and Raul came on for Benzema and Higuain but Kaka was once again the provider as Madrid went two up.

The Brazil forward went past two players with a lovely piece of skill and rolled the ball back for the unmarked Guti to finish easily.

Guti then turned provider in the final minute, picking our Ronaldo with an exquisite pass with the outside of his boot, and the former Manchester United forward coolly slotted a neat finish through Kameni's legs to complete a satisfactory afternoon for Madrid, albeit with what was a flattering scoreline in the end.

Pellegrini's side have now won two out of two and join Barcelona - who earlier beat Getafe 2-0 - at the league's summit, while Espanyol remain bottom and pointless after what ultimately proved an unhappy first competitive match at Cornella.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lionel Messi netted second-half goals as Barcelona made it two wins from two at the start of the season.

Ibrahimovic, having netted on his league debut for Barca in their 3-0 win over Sporting Gijon a fortnight ago, paid back a little more of his 66million euro transfer fee by opening the scoring in the 65th minute.

The former Inter Milan hitman then turned provider to set up Messi for Barca's second 12 minutes from time as last season's treble winners came out on top in the battle between the leading two sides from the opening round of fixtures.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola opted to field a number of fringe players in his starting line-up for the match, no doubt with one eye on next week's testing Champions League trip to Inter Milan.

However, the Catalan giants still had plenty of firepower should they have needed it with their substitute's bench reading like a who's who of international superstars - among them Thierry Henry, Messi, Dani Alves and Andres Iniesta.

And it was not until Guardiola opted to send Messi and Iniesta on as a double substitution just before the hour-mark that Barca managed to take control of the game.

Up until that point the reigning champions had struggled to get the upper hand, and they could consider themselves somewhat fortunate to have been on level terms at the break after Getafe twice hit the woodwork.

The first time was in the 12th minute when Juan Albin's left-footed shot from outside the box smashed against the underside of the crossbar with Victor Valdes nothing more than a helpless onlooker.

Fifteen minutes after that it was the turn of Roberto Soldado, Getafe's hat-trick hero in their opening-day 4-1 win over Racing Santander.

Pedro Leon played in a low cross from the right and Soldado's acrobatic overhead kick struck the near post, with Valdes again motionless.

Aside from the hugely impressive Xavi, Barca looked short of ideas going forward in the opening 45 minutes, although Ibrahimovic did have a great chance to break the deadlock just before the break.

He muscled his way clear of his marker but with just Oscar Ustari to beat he saw his low shot saved by the Getafe goalkeeper.

Getafe were making life difficult for their illustrious visitors, but the introductions of Messi and Iniesta - playing his first match since last season's Champions League final due to injury - changed the whole complexion of the match.

Within two minutes of their arrival Xavi almost netted with a superb dipping 25-yard strike that Ustari did well to tip over, and soon after that Barca did finally score through Ibrahimovic.

Eric Abidal's low cross from the right looked to have eluded the Swede, but the giant striker stuck out his leg and managed to deflect the ball just inside the far post.

Getafe tried to mount an immediate response and Adrian tested Valdes and Albin blazed a half-chance well over, but aside from that it was pretty much all Barca in the final 20 minutes.

Iniesta could have made it 2-0 in the 76th minute but he fired straight at Ustari with just the keeper to beat.

Barca need not have worried, though, because two minutes after that Messi did double his side's lead.

Alves, having also come off the bench, sent over a deep cross that Ibrahimovic controlled before unselfishly chipping back across goal for the unmarked Messi to thump a powerful header into the roof of the net.

Messi and Ibrahimovic could have added more goals in the closing stages, but Barca had already done enough to take the spoils and they will travel to Italy in buoyant mood.

Sevilla responded in style to their opening-day defeat to record their first league win of the season at the expense of Real Zaragoza.

Abdoulay Konko opened the scoring for the hosts in the eighth minute and Luis Fabiano re-established that lead in first-half stoppage time after Javier Arizmendi had stunned the home crowd with an equaliser.

Diego Perotti gave Manolo Jimenez's side breathing space with a third goal in the 57th minute and Luis Fabiano put the icing on the cake three minutes from time as memories of the 2-0 loss at Valencia last time out were swept aside.

Sevilla, without striker Frederic Kanoute following his dismissal in the Primera Division opener against Valencia, handed a first league start to summer signing Didier Zokora.

Abel Aguilar started on the bench for Zaragoza following international duty with Colombia, but winger Jermaine Pennant was passed fit after a slight injury.

The hosts needed less than eight minutes to make the breakthrough, Renato poking through for Konko to expertly slot his first Sevilla goal past Juan Carrizo.

The visitors looked to hit back swiftly with a right-footed shot from Leonardo Ponzio but Andres Palop was equal to it.

Renato then endeavoured to add a goal to his assist with a long-range blast only to see Roberto Ayala get in the way.

Former Tottenham midfielder Zokora marked his full debut for his new club with a yellow card in the 28th minute for a clumsy challenge on Ikechukwu Uche.

Jesus Navas had a sight of goal just after the half-hour to make it 2-0 but saw his long-range curler comfortably dealt with by Carrizo.

When the next goal arrived it came at the other end, silencing the vast majority inside the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Uche headed back across goal for an unmarked Arizmendi to fire home, seemingly catching a static Palop off-guard.

Sevilla came within a whisker of re-establishing their advantage nine minutes before the interval when Luis Fabiano flicked a left-footed shot past the out-rushing Carrizo but was denied by the left-hand post as the Zaragoza defence waited for an offside flag which never materialised.

The Brazilian was not to be denied in first-half stoppage time, however.

Alvaro Negredo flicked on a hopeful long ball and Luis Fabiano managed to get his foot to the ball ahead of Carrizo and lift a neat finish into Zaragoza net.

Uche had to be replaced by Herrera Ander three minutes before the break after seemingly sustaining a knee injury challenging for the ball.

The match took a distinct turn in the home team's favour in a 60-second spell shortly before the hour mark.

Arizmendi saw a seemingly good equaliser ruled out for offside when he appeared to be level with the last defender and, moments later, Sevilla were two goals to the good.

Defender Federico Fazio rampaged down the right wing and crossed for fellow Argentinian Perotti to unleash a fierce left-footed strike, which beat Carrizo at his near post.

Luis Fabiano almost stretched Sevilla's lead further in the 69th minute with a powerful downward header from Perotti's corner which Carrizo gathered at the second attempt.

The South American frontman did grab his second of the match in the 87th minute, however, lashing home at the second attempt after Manuel Lolo's glancing header had hit the post from Navas' corner.

Real Madrid 5-0 Xerez

A Cristiano Ronaldo brace and a late goal glut saw Real Madrid make it three wins out of three at the start of the Primera Liga season.

Visitors Xerez, playing in the top flight for the first time in their history this season, suffered a nightmare start on their trip to the Bernabeu as they fell behind in the first minute to a Ronaldo strike.

However, the Andalusian side recovered remarkably well from that early setback and it was not until the final 15 minutes when Manuel Pellegrini's side finally managed to see off their plucky opponents as they added four more goals.

Ronaldo made it 2-0, before Guti, Karim Benzema and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was making his first competitive appearance since suffering a serious injury last year, also found the back of the net to give the scoreline a one-sided look.

It was not the best of performances by Madrid, but a brilliant end to the game and the perfect start means they join arch-rivals Barcelona on nine points at the top of the standings.

Xerez must have feared the worst as they found themselves trailing following the opening attack of the game, with Ronaldo the man doing the damage.

The world's most expensive player showed great power and pace to create himself a shooting opportunity on the edge of the box and he took advantage by drilling a low shot past Renan Brito at his near post.

That was Ronaldo's fifth goal in four competitive appearances this season following his £80million move from Manchester United, and many would have expected it to be have been the spark for a goal-laden Madrid masterclass.

And that certainly looked on the cards as the home side nearly doubled their lead five minutes later only for the Xerez goal to somehow survive unscathed as Ronaldo, Raul and Kaka all went close one after another.

Renan did superbly to first deny Ronaldo and then Raul from the follow-up before Kaka put his effort wide.

However, the anticipated avalanche of goals failed to materialise before the break and, aside from a Sergio Ramos header that was pushed over by Renan, Madrid failed to seriously threaten the visitors in the remainder of the period.

And it might easily have been 1-1 going into the break if Emilio Viqueira's 10th-minute free-kick had been about a foot lower, with his 25-yard effort clipping the top of post before going over.

There was no significant improvement from the home side at the start of the second period either, and Xerez gave their hosts another scare in the 51st minute when Giancarlo Maldonado was handed a shooting chance on the edge of the box.

He could not get enough power on his effort to seriously test Iker Casillas though, and Madrid could breathe again.

Pellegrini's side were still struggling to find any fluidity to their game, and with the expensively-assembled superstars creating little in the way of chances, the home fans were starting to get increasingly frustrated.

However, any concerns or fears the Madridistas may have had about Xerez possibly getting back on level terms were emphatically crushed as the Whites went from 1-0 to 4-0 in the space of just six minutes.

Ronaldo was the man to spark the goal glut as he climbed highest to glance home Esteban Granero's corner in the 75th minute, and substitute Guti made it 3-0 three minutes later as he smashed the ball home from 10 yards out after Karim Benzema had made a mess of his own shooting chance.

Benzema would still get his name on the scoresheet though as he slammed home a left-footed shot into the far top corner as Xerez's valiant defence finally started to wilt.

Madrid were not finished there either, and there remained time for Van Nistelrooy - who received a standing ovation after coming on as a late substitute - to slot home his side's fifth to seal a big, if not wholly convincing, victory.

Ronaldo ruled out with injury

Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of tomorrow's Primera Division showdown with Sevilla due to injury.

The Real Madrid forward has been unable to fully recover from the ankle knock he received during the midweek Champions League win over Marseille and has been left out of Manuel Pellegrini's 18-man man squad for the trip south.

Losing Ronaldo is a blow for Madrid as he has been in prolific form at the start of the season, scoring nine goals in seven competitive appearances following his world-record move from Manchester United in the summer.

Also missing for Madrid are Lassana Diarra, Alvaro Arbeloa, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Fernando Gago as the league leaders look to continue their 100% start to the campaign against third-placed Sevilla.

We are not the Real Ronaldos!

Jorge Valdano has declared that Real Madrid can function just as well as a team without Portuguese wing wizard Cristiano Ronaldo.

A lot has been made of the recent Madrid defeat, the only loss this season, which has come in Ronaldo's absence through injury, but Valdano is adamant that the 2-1 loss to Sevilla was not directly due to the Portugal international not playing on that day. The sporting director did concede that Madrid did miss the talents of the winger.

"How is he [Ronaldo] not going to be missed?" he responded when asked about the former Manchester United man.

"That does not mean that the team can't work perfectly without him. It's too early to say that there is dependency," Valdano added, according to AS, before leaping to the defence of Marcelo.

He added, "He's [Marcelo] a left-sided player and central midfielder. He's 21-years-old. He is very young and has been making progress. We must not condemn him for one game. We believe he has a future here."
