ManU: Silvestre Out for the season!
Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre will miss the rest of the season after injuring his cruciate knee ligament in Saturday's 1-0 win at Everton. French left-back Silvestre, 30, was hurt towards the end of the first half of the match at Goodison Park when he attempted to cut out a pass by Mikel Arteta. He was carried off the pitch on a stretcher clearly in agony, and Sir Alex Ferguson said later he was concerned about the extent of the injury.
Manchester United later confirmed on its website that Silvestre "is likely to miss the rest of the season after scans confirmed that he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury."
It is desperately bad news for the Silvestre, who whose first team appearances have been limited due to the impressive form of fellow Frenchman Patrice Evra.
Silvestre signed for Manchester United in September 1999 in a £4.5million deal from Inter Milan as a defender who could play at full-back and centre-back. Liverpool were also chasing the player's signature but he chose Old Trafford with Ferguson's assurances that he would be played in his preferred position in central defence.
However, Silvestre had spent a large part of his Manchester United career as a marauding leftback and was used only sparingly in central defence.
It is bad news for United as well, as it robs Ferguson of experienced defensive cover at left-back after Gabriel Heinze's acrimonious move to Real Madrid.
With John O'Shea also out after sustaining injury on Republic of Ireland duty last week, youngsters Gerard Pique and Johnny Evans are likely to be among Ferguson's squad when United open their Champions League campaign against Sporting Lisbon in Portugal on Wednesday.
OMG!!! Thats bad!
