Scholes picked up a knee injury in training before last week's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev, and had not responded to the initial treatement, prompting fears that it might be more serious than initially expected.
Early scans had proved inconclusive, partly because of the swelling, but it has now been confirmed that he has ruptured a ligament.
The news was confirmed this afternoon after he visited a specialist, and he will go under the surgeon's knife on Thursday, following which he will begin his rehabilitation.
Said a club spokesperson on the official website: "We can confirm that Paul Scholes has suffered a knee ligament injury.
"He will undergo an operation on Thursday and will be out for approximately 12 weeks."
In the meantime, Sir Alex Ferguson will have to rely on Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves and anderson to do the job. John O'Shea is another player who can double up as a midfielder.
