ManU claimed the community shield by defeating their bitter rivals Chealsea 3-0 on penalties after the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 after extra time.

It was always going to be a tight match leading up to the premiership, with both united and chelsea feilding their best available team. It was ManU that drew the first blood when Ryan Giggs scroed the first goal of the match at 35th min Chelsea drew level at 45 min through a strike from Florent Malouda.

However it was Van der sarwho turned out to be the hero of the match after saving three penalty strokes .

Van Der Sar was awesome yesterday. Man those saves were simply stunning. Dont remember when I saw 3 back to back strikes saved by any keeper in Penalty shootout.
ManU wested some chances in 2nd half though, specially the one 5 mins into 2nd half.

Well I had lost hope when the match was tied after the extra time. I never liked van der sar's technique, but he did well this time, especially the save on a Lampard penalty kick... Hope he continues the form in premiership as well, as it is we have a comparitivly weak defense.
