Alonso: Shameful if Hamilton wins title in court

Deposed world champion Fernando Alonso says he would be ashamed for Formula 1 if his team-mate Lewis Hamilton became world champion on the back of McLaren winning a case through the appeal court.

The outcome of the 2007 championship was thrown into doubt late on Sunday night after McLaren, who had seen Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen pip both of its drivers to the drivers’ crown at Interlagos, signalled it would appeal the stewards’ decision not to penalise Williams and BMW Sauber for alleged fuel irregularities.

Hamilton finished two points shy of beating Raikkonen to the title in seventh place, but the three cars that finished directly ahead of him in Brazil were a Williams (Nico Rosberg) and the two BMWs (Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld) – meaning if they had been disqualified he would have been promoted to fourth place and become world champion.

However Alonso, who’s McLaren future remains in doubt after a strained season at the team, believes that should an appeal hearing happen and McLaren win, it would damage the sport and ensure the wrong man won the championship.

"If Hamilton wins by the appeal I will hide my head in shame, it would be a lack of respect,” he told Spain’s Cadena Ser radio station.

"Whoever gets the most points is the rightful champion.

“It would sink the sport if they won the title this way."

Alonso’s two-year reign as world champion came to an end at Interlagos after finishing a distant third to the runaway Ferrari duo.

A McLaren driver had led the drivers’ championship since the second round of the season, but it was Raikkonen, who had been 26 points behind Hamilton at mid-season, who ended up snatching the title.

Alonso says the team has only itself to blame for losing the championship and reiterated his belief that his own bid didn’t receive enough support.

“It doesn't seem like the season has been managed very well," he said.

"The result speaks for itself.

“McLaren lost the championship probably because of some of the decisions they took, especially in the second half of the season.

“It's no secret that they haven't helped me a lot,” he added.

For once he's right. I agree with him that they were a bit more supportive towards Lewis which is understandable. Lewis has been with them for long and this was Alonso's first season with McLaren. Also, the the British connection and the father-son relationship between Ron & Lewis made it difficult for Alonso. Its hard for anyone to accept defeat at the hands of a rookie and we're talking about a double world champion here. The only consolation for Alonso is that he ended the season at 109 points (same as Lewis). The best result Dennis could have hoped for considering he always flaunts driver equality.

Ok enough of it.
Alonso has to be kicked out of Mclaren now.
I was pretty sure he is more than happy Lewis didn't win. Coupled with his unsporting maneuverer at the race start, its pretty clear where his loyalties are. (if anywhere)

Mclaren doesn't need another season with this joker. Its pretty clear that Mc would be constructors champion but for Alonso and Mclaren needs to make sure not to be swayed by his attempts now to mend fences. He deserves to go back to Renau;lt so that Mclaren can safely win the next years championship (if they don't win it this year )

Michael Schumacher says there should be a clear status of driver1 and driver2. And he is right. Look at what happened with Mclaren and for that matter Ferari now. Both the drivers (in mclaren and ferrari camps)were fighting for championship and the points went down dividing between those two. At the end a third guy was able to squeeze in. Now, if Alonso was given a clear number 1 status or for that matter lewis hamilton (i cant even imagine Alonso saying yes to number 2 ) one of the drivers would have accumalated the points and would have become a winner of the championship long time back.

Naa its fine if Mclaren wants to follow this system but if it does want to then they have to ensure that the drivers are cool headed non blabbering type. Alonso is a top class driver, but he is not a team man. If Mclaren are gonna continue their present strategy(which they will i think, although i see Hamilton getting more favours with british connection) then they can't have Alonso.

Alonso will work best for a team where he is the only top guy around and his partner is a very average driver and one who can be dominated.

Btw if Alonso is going out of Mclaren, then who is coming in? Pedro?

I disagree...... It is not necessary to have a Number 1 and a number 2.

I support both sides.

McLaren has always had a policy of giving equal attention and resources to both drivers. And they are the second most successful team in F1. \

what you are asking for is somewhat unsportive (like Barrichello moving aside and letting Schumi win the 2002 Austrian GP).

but in 2007, Ferrari gave equal preference to both drivers. But when Massa was out of the race for the championship, he did support Kimi. This is perfect.

Absolutely. For once, we agree .

But I am not too sure abt they winning next year . Ross Brawn is coming back to Ferrari

Well, maybe initially. But Alonso had no bloody right to go to the press with his grievances. He was washing dirty linen in public and that instantly transformed the team.

Initially, they might have been more supportive of Hamilton, but they also had a lot of respect for Crybaby (double World champion and all). they gave him the deserved respect (you cant act all pally and chummy with someone who has JUST joined the team, can you ?).

But when he started showing his trrue Whinelonso colours, they started disliking him

I think this was always the case with McLaren. I remember Kimi and Coulthard have fought some interesting battles inspite of being in the same team. This matter never came into spot light cause they didn't have a 'Alonso' to crib on such trivial issues in their team I think this strategy has always worked for McLaren. On the contray Ferrari always had their No.1 and No.2 driver pair, be it Schumi-Ervine,Schumi-Barrichello, Schumi-Massa or now Kimi-Massa.
