Default Australian Grand prix under flood :D

Mar.10 (GMM) Organisers of the endangered Australian grand prix have offered to run the Melbourne race at 5pm from next year.

The proposed compromise, announced at a news conference on Monday, comes after F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone warned that the only way Albert Park will be featured on the 2010 calendar is if the circuit is fitted with floodlights for a night race.

With a 3.30pm start, Sunday's race is already later than usual, as Ecclestone tries to bolster European television ratings.

A 5pm local start for 2009 will mean a 7am start in Europe, 6am in Britain, and an afternoon start in Asia.

"All this can be achieved without any additional infrastructure costs," said AGPC chairman Ron Walker, already under pressure from the Victorian state government to get the costs of the race under control.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for new Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd has denied Ecclestone's claim that the pair recently discussed the future of the grand prix.

"The grand prix is a matter for the Victorian government," he said, as local media speculate that Ecclestone mistook Rudd for Victorian premier John Brumby.

Looks like everyone will go onto night racing now

True, but local organisers have been under constant attack, from almost the very first GP, from a variety of sources........ At the moment, the biggest stumbling block are those against cigarette & alcohol advertisements that litter the F1 sidelines, their marquees and all the other stuff that goes along with it. Take that away and the race teams would find it hard to justify their costs in staging the event, which would be a shame as the Melbourne GP is a good one.

It's become a game of politics with interstate rivalries once more dogging everything we do as respective state governments try to outdo each other. There's also a few other considerations too, firstly, we're very spoiled for choice here in Victoria, almost every week, you can guarantee there'll be a 'big' event somewhere to go to and it can lead to the general population becoming jaded.... And a fair few people get frustrated by the constant big event parades, the GP is held in Albert Park, which carries a significant amount of daily traffic, shut that area down while the GP is on and it causes chaos....

My brother is a senior fire officer in Queensland, he was saying that emergency services up there hate the Indy Car races they have in Surfers each year, he reckons that if a hotel on the strip was to catch fire, they wouldn't be able to get there in time, because of the races....

I'm for the race as I enjoy car racing, but I admit, I usually watch it on tele
