Newly re-crowned world champion Fernando Alonso has expressed his gratitude to Renault’s staff for their part in his and the team’s second consecutive title wins.

Addressing a full turnout of 540 Renault F1 employees at the team’s factory in Enstone, near his Oxford home, Alonso said that justice had been done after the season-long battle with Ferrari.

“Thank you, thank you all very much,” he began.

“Really, there is nothing new to say. I just want to thank everybody, every single person in the team that helped win these two championships.

“We have had a very tough season, and a very close fight with Ferrari.

“And at the end, you know, time puts everybody in their place – and we are in P1 because we deserved it more than the others.

“I think there are thousands of people in the Formula 1 teams and of them only one team is champion. In the last two years, you have proved you are the best.

“I want to thank everyone for giving me the possibility to have a winning car in my hands, and to say I did my best to earn my championships and your championships as well.

“We did it.”

Alonso will move from Renault to McLaren at the end of this year but said the Anglo-French squad would always have a special place in his affections.

“I am now moving on to another team as you know, but if I don’t have the possibility to win in the future, then I hope you win because you are the best,” he said.

The Spaniard will celebrate the titles in his hometown of Oviedo this Sunday before visiting the Renault engine team at Viry-Chatillon next week.

What a turncoat. One day he blames his team and when everything is hunky dory, he loves his team.

I actually like the McLaren team and I feel bad for them for gettin stuck with this guy....

I dont wish THAT was true.

I wish the team which deserved to win won....

I am really depressed. My hero is gone from F1.... I find it agonising to read F1 articles on the net nowadays.... It hurts me so much.
