Anthony Davidson believes Super Aguri can realistically expect to challenge for its first points in its second season of Formula 1 in 2007.
The 27-year-old will finally get the chance to compete a full F1 campaign next year after he was confirmed as Takuma Sato’s team-mate at the Leafield-based squad after six seasons as a test driver for BAR and Honda.
Although the Briton has three grand prix starts experience, he has yet to finish a race – but he insists once he overcomes that hurdle, he can target points scoring finishes as the 2007 season progresses.
“I haven’t finished a race yet due to various circumstances, so my first objective is to finish my first race with the team in Melbourne and then go from there – build up the learning blocks,” he said.
“Even though I know the format I am still going to be learning.
“By the end of the year I hope to be pushing Taku really hard and hopefully we will be in a competitive environment with our car.
“The ultimate goal has to be scoring points in your first year and I believe that this is now a realistic goal.”
Davidson’s move to Aguri Suzuki’s team reunites him with long-term buddy Sato.
After going head-to-head for the British F3 title in 2001, the pair worked together at BAR in 2003-2005 and the Briton believes that the combination will motivate the team to move forwards next season.
“It feels a bit strange,” he admitted.
“I obviously competed with him in Formula 3 and then worked with him at BAR as it was then.
“So it will feel a bit strange, but also this time I will be competing directly against him in a way!
“It will be a
fun year, we get on really well and we know each others strengths and weaknesses and hopefully, like in any good team, we will push everybody on to bigger and better things.”
