India will join the Formula One calendar in 2010, Bernie Ecclestone revealed this week.

Speaking to US financial news service Bloomberg, Ecclestone said he was 'far down the line' in negotiating with an unidentified regional government. It is understood that the circuit will not be in Hyderabad. Construction will begin shortly, he said.

"India is a country that is probably going to grow quicker than China," Ecclestone said. "We had to make sure we found the right place in India and we have.
"

To Bloomberg, Ecclestone also contradicted reports that Imola could one day have its Grand Prix reinstated, and floated the concept of alternating an annual race between traditional venues in Britain and France.

"It's bye-bye to San Marino," he started, before saying that French race organisers 'are happy' with a race-sharing scheme. As for Britain, possessing a contract for Silverstone only until 2009, Ecclestone continued: "I don't know what they want."
Ecclestone hinted the 56-year-old race, the oldest in F1, could alternate with the French Grand Prix.

"The French are happy to do that. As for the British race, I don't know what they want," he told Bloomberg.

The British Racing Drivers' Club, who own the Northamptonshire circuit, are in talks with the F1 chief to extend the current deal that expires in 2009.

Meanwhile, Ecclestone is keen for India to be on the list of hosts by 2010.

The sport's supremo said a venue had been found to stage the event, but did not reveal as to where it was.

"India is a country that is probably going to grow quicker than China," he added.

"We had to make sure we found the right place in India and we have."

hmm...interesting.... so which govt is ready to blow billions on the f1 race track...

heck!! cause of the apathy of the govt to repair the pot holes.. we might see totally different cars for f1!!!.. you never know!! .. they might just change the chassis and bring changes in the tyre technology!! go india go!!!!!!

During morning practice, neighbourhood slum children will line up along side the track making good use of all that kitty litter.
