Kimi focusing on titles not future
Kimi Raikkonen says he is focusing on winning more world titles rather than thinking about what he will do once his Ferrari contract expires in 2009.
The 28-year-old Finn finally became world champion at the third serious attempt last season after winning six races in his first year at the Italian squad following his switch from McLaren.
He admits claiming a drivers’ crown has always been his career target – but that with one now in the bag he is determined to win more.
“I have always said that I wouldn’t want to retire without having one at least one title,” he said in an interview with Italy’s Corriere dello Sport newspaper.
“I have now achieved that goal.
“Now I want more, as many as possible.
“Starting with the next one.”
Shortly after the announcement was made that he was to join the Scuderia, Raikkonen hinted that his three-year deal could be his last in Formula 1.
But when asked in the interview if he was thinking about retirement with the end of his current deal two years away, he insisted he wasn't putting a time limit on how long he will extend his career.
“Not at all,” he said.
“But my horizons at the moment goes to the end of 2009 when my contract with Ferrari runs out.
“I am not setting other limits for myself.
“I don’t know how many more years I will race.”
He also reiterated that he felt totally at home at Maranello and that he wants to stay there for the rest of his career.
“I am satisfied with the team, am satisfied with the relationship with the engineers and everything else,” he said.
“I don’t see any reason to go anywhere else. This team suits me very well.
“I don’t know whether this will be my last contract, but I want Ferrari to be my last team.”
