This year will be the first without a German Grand Prix since 1955, after the loss of the Hockenheim event, and with the Nurburgring retaining its ‘European Grand Prix’ moniker.
However, the Germans are nothing if not sticklers for continuity, and an ambitious plan to keep the German GP alive has been announced by Hans Undnees, Mayoral candidate for Kerpen, home town of Michael Schumacher.
As one of his election pledges, Herr Undnees has asked the organisers of the Belgian GP to consider the addition of a loop to the Spa circuit, at the Stavelot corner, which will nip over the German border and take in Kerpen, before rejoining the main track along the pit straight.
Said Hans yesterday: “Sure, this will add a few miles to the race, but the benefits of having two races in one will outweigh that small problem and we still get a bit of a German GP.”
However, the audacious plan looks set for failure, as officials in Brussels insist that random customs and passport checks will still have to take place at the border, which will seriously increase the lap times of any driver unlucky enough to be stopped.
