Mercedes committed to McLaren and F1 McLaren has received strong backing from its engine partner Mercedes-Benz following the ‘spygate’ hearing last week – with the German carmaker reaffirming its commitment to both the team and Formula 1.
The Woking-based squad was heavily fined and had its constructors’ points for this season wiped by the World Motor Sport Council, promoting speculation about the possible reactions of the team’s sponsors and partners to the decision.
But Mercedes-Benz, whose parent company DaimlerChrysler has a 40% stake in McLaren, has insisted that the issue has not changed its future plans in F1.
“Of course we do,” Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug was quoted as saying by the Guardian newspaper when asked if the company had the same support for the sport as before.
“This is not for discussion.
“We also stand by our partner McLaren.
“And we refrain from putting the blame on anybody.”
Haug also said he had no concerns about a possible Mercedes withdrawal from F1 in the aftermath of the spying controversy.
“No worries at all,” he said.
“And I don’t see any sign of the image problems some say we are supposed to have.
“On the contrary, we get a lot of support and encouragement from outside.”
