Double Formula 1 world champion Mika Hakkinen has accepted the role of responsible drinking ambassador for McLaren sponsor Diageo through its Johnnie Walker brand.

The Finn, who has been the subject of speculation linking him to a return to the team that brought him so much success in the late '90s, has been hired to raise awareness of responsible drinking with relation to driving.

“I am extremely proud to represent such a prestigious company as Diageo in this very important role," commented Hakkinen on his appointment.

"My years on the racetrack have shown the vital role responsibility and control play in motor sport, these principles are just as important for drivers on the road around the world.

"This is a role that I truly believe in.”

Though a mooted race seat remains an unlikely, if not an entirely discountable, possibility, Hakkinen's appointment could be seen as strengthening existing ties with the McLaren-Mercedes team as it shapes its plans for 2007.
