you find that a lot in the Mediterranean, not so much available land for building, so people carve into the rock.......... we do something similar in australia, especially, (most famously) Coober Pedy in Sth Oz.......... sun's too hot so ppl went underground for shelter...

There must be no need of cooler in those house during summer.
