Accident

It was a foggy winter night and the entire shimla forest seemed to be covered with a blanket of silence, which was suddenly broken by a speedy car. Kunal, Rahul, Mythri and Prathiba were returning to their hostels after their week long trip to Manali. All of them were final year medical students in a college in Shimla. Rahul was zipping the car through the highway. Mythri had warned him to drive slowly, but he laughed off her concerns. Suddenly through the white fog he hears a strange voice, and the moment he sees a woman on the highway. In a desperate attempt to avoid hitting the woman Rahul jams the car into the deodar tree next to the highway. The loud noice of collision is followed by a moment of silence.

Pratibha cries, “God! I can feel a nuclear bomb exploding in my brain.” Kunal responds, “We all should thank our god that we have escaped unhurt”. All of them get off the car and realize Kunal was right. The car had stopped barely two feet off the valley.

Rahul shouts,”But where is that woman who was standing in middle of the highway?”

“Which woman? Now don’t give lame excuses for this mess, Mythri had warned you to drive slowly” Pratibha fires back

“Arey, I am telling you there was a woman on the highway, first I saw her and also herad a strange voice, that’s why I avoided the road and this happened.”

“Oh, really? Do you mean only you could see that woman, all of us were in the car too”.

Prathiba hears Mythri chanting something.

“What are u murmuring?” Asks prathiba

“Its Hanuman Chalisa, my grandmother told me u can ward off evil if u chant this”.

“Don’t be stupid, ghosts, evils spirits are all good in stories, I can’t believe being a medical student you believe in them” Kunal says unable to control his laughter.

“Come on guys, have some seriousness, its midnight and we are stranded here in middle of this forest. Think about how can we reach Shimla by tomorrow morning” thunders Rahul.

Prathiba replies.”It will be unsafe to be standing here in one place, it’ll be better if we keep walking on this highway and hope for a lift”.

All of them agree and they start walking on the highway. They find some vehicles passing by but none of them stop to give them the lift.

“Kameena, Yeh bhi gaya! can’t he see we are stranded here in middle of a jungle, even an enemy will not do this to worst of foes, Shimla is still 200 kilometers away and we can’t walk all the way” Kunal breathes fire.

“This place is infamous for dacoits so most drivers don’t stop their vehicles” Rahul says

“Yeah right! Do we look like highwaymen? Come on yaar, atleast they should see there are two girls also with us” Kunal fires back

There argument is ended when they see a truck parked some distance apart. Their eyes are lit up with joy.

“Lets ask the driver, he will surely help us out”. Shouts mythri

“I don’t think that’ll be a good idea, what if he doesn’t agree? we’ll get into the truck and get off it in the checkpost near Shimla, once we reach there we will easily find some means to get to the college.”

All of them agree with Rahul’s idea. They get into the vehicle. Its totally dark inside.

“This place is really scary, and this stinks like hell” cries Mythri.

“This could one of those vehicles which are used to carry the cattle from the valley”. Rahul says.

All four of them are tired by the accident and the events that followed, so they are all fast asleep.

Its about 9 in the morning and they wake up with a thunderous shout form Rahul. “Look where we have reached!” They all come out of vehicle and see they are right in front of their college. When the get out from the vehicle they realize it was actually a hearse.

“God we were traveling in a hearse!” Cries Mythri.

“Arey, we wouldn’t have found a better lift, god bless the deceased souls, we have got the we got a free lift all the way to our college, we should thank these corpse” Rahul laughs

They hear a voice coming from the assembly hall of their college, which they recognize soon. It was their principal’s voice.

They walk slowly towards the assembly hall, the voice becomes clearer. And then there is total silence. For the first time they see the cops inside their campus. All were in grief and seemed as if there were mourning for someone.

Mythri hears one of them say, “Rahul and Mythri were very dear to me, we were very good friends.”

All of them run back to the hearse and open the door, they see four coffins inside. In the background they hear the principal’s voice again.

“Death is inevitable and we all know that, what is not certain however is when it arrives. Its is really sad day for our college, four of our students who were traveling back from their trip have met a fateful accident and who prematurely left the earthly life.”

Awesome Narration. Definitely a contender for the first prize. The only complain I have is that your story is a bit too clichéd. I am pretty sure I have seen such endings in many serials and movies so the climax of the story was not a complete surprise to me. But overall a very well written piece. You created a very good atmosphere and I really enjoyed reading it. Great effort.
